Description

Formerly mpsmith...

Hi, I am Mike, I have been a music collector for over 30 years now. My Ebay name has now changed at the request of Ebay for security - little else will change I hope, I will still try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find - I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any interested collector. You may notice I only submit one or two items a day for Ebay; time rarely allows more as I Play-Grade every record I offer (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. A ten pounds record that plays close to new is as important to the collector as a 250 pound record that plays less well. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. Good luck.

Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance. Item wants are always welcome - email me with anything needed. I also will buy quality single items or collections of original quality rock, 60s popular, folk, prog, psych and underground etc.

PLEASE READ ALL DESCRIPTIONS AND CHECK PICTURES CAREFULLY FOR ALL THE INFORMATION GIVEN - also note I will be unavailable for answering any questions until Monday evening.

Artist or Band: THE BEATLES

Album Title: Revolver, rare 1st press mono

Cat Number: PMC 7009.

Label and Condition: Parlophone Yellow and Black. Sold in the UK etc, The Gramophone Co Ltd etc, Made in Gt Britain. Quite clean examples but showing moderate+ to heavy- spindle marks. This copy has clearly been played many times. (Please see label scans for all details needed)

Country of Manufacture: Gt Britain

Rarity Factor: Rare and very sort after and collectable

Original Year of Release: 1966

Matrix Nos: XEX 605-2 and XEX 606-1 The tiny pressing numbers are 1 GH and 1 GP, never easy to read these but I think these are correct. I have tried to scan a close up of the matrix 606-1, I hope it can be seen - I have slightly enhanced the contrast to make it more visible, rest assured its here.

Album Information: Yes you read this correctly, this is the first pressing of this wonderful record. Can I make it clear right from the start this copy is below my minimum selling grading of EX - but as stated in my preamble I will make exceptions when the album in question merits it. This is very rare as it was withdrawn from sale very quickly. Most Beatles collectors and fans will know the importance of this record with the famous 606-1 matrix on side two. The final song, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ has a vastly different mix to all other pressings and remains one of the most important Beatles albums to have in a collection. I recently purchased a fabulous Beatles collection from a private seller, included in this was a near mint copy of this amazing record - I’m sorry but that has gone already with even making it to the Net. This was the copy the original owner upgraded from. Without doubt it has been played quite alot. It has a lot of surface marks, a few light scratches and hairlines. It plays far better than it looks, incredibly hardly any of the marks sound as pops or ticks proving again how tough and resilient this 60s vinyl is to these marks. Most of the sound information lies beneath the deep grooves. What was damaged and worn more is the actual record grooves from the heavy tone arms on most of the 60s decks around this time. So it comes as no surprise that there is a range of light to moderate surface noise throughout most of this record. That said a large proportion of it does not notice too much because of the very loud sound and mix of this strunning record - much is absorbed. Okay on the quiet passages the sound will notice far more, but any collector who wants this album for what should be a reasonable price, here’s a golden opportunity. Even a VG copy will normally fetch decent prices, an excellent copy, high prices and a near mint copy will be vast prices - often making four figures. The way I see this, its like owning a rare postage stamp: A Queen Victoria £5 orange stamp in top condition will easily make £1500 to £2000 plus, out of reach for many collectors, even many enthusiasts. But a decent used copy or even one with a small tear or small damage is far more affordable and far better to have this than not having at all. I describe more fully what is on offer below in more detail and can I will also make clear I will NOT refund on this album because everything will be clear and NOT overhyped to get a sale - if it does not sell, there are many private dealers or City-based shops that will want it. This record plays with some surface sounds and mild distortion in places - that’s clear enough. There is no reserve on this and my minimum selling price is ridiculously low, so any interested bidder takes the choice. Quite honestly from the evidence I have seen for copies of this its almost the norm - far better copies hardly ever show now, and as stated earlier if they do the prices are usually massive. For example I saw a copy in London only 3 weeks ago in visually far inferior condition to this but the shop still asked £250 - how it played I do not know, but pretty poorly I would guess. But this is how much this gem is valued now by shops and big dealers - the RC pride guide states £400 for a top copy and that is just so undervalued its beyond belief, so this really could be the only opportunity to get a copy in this condition at a decent price.

Cover Condition and Details: Excellent+, single, small mono on top right, laminated front, three huge flipbacks, also available in stereo etc printed on back. Use New Emitex advert on back also. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. This is a truly lovely cover for this, the record may be well played and marked but the cover is terrific really with little wear and its the original cover this came with, NO substitutions.

Cover Lamination: Superb lamination, very clean with little creasing. A lovely mirror like shine and few marks. No lifting, peeling or dry areas.

Cover Front: Very attractive indeed, almost worth any price alone. I would be proud to offer a top copy of this album in this cover. There is hardly any wear to this front at all. Clean and unyellowed with hardly any marks or creasing. Even surface marks are few and far between. Lovely.

Cover Back: Astonishing clean condition again with no rubbing or ringwear etc. Again very clean and unworn. The flipbacks are as solid as anything I have offered before and hardly any creases on these either. Still firmly stuck down and unfreyed, even a lack of the dark marks that often form around where the laminate ends. Some fingermark traces on the black only. A remarkable back cover and way, way above the average.

Cover Edges/Corners: Superb again, the top and bottom edges are very solid and unworn, the laminate still fully intact and strong. There is a light graze to the entry edge and the back edge looks to have been ‘improved’ for about 2 inches, done very well and would hardly notice. The spine is perfection, square and unworn all the text is pristine under the uncracked laminate. The four corners almost could pass as new, all square with barely even a crease. Overall an astonishing clean original cover and this should even please the serious collector, bar the graze on the entry edge I would grade in the near mint minus class.

Vinyl Condition: Visually around the Good mark (I have only once had to check the book to grade this low), I think this would be accurate, maybe Good+ would be more accurate. The record is clean and still has shine, obviously pressed on very heavy vinyl. Both side have numerous marks as stated earlier, most are superficial and do NOT sound as pops or ticks. This record plays better than it looks but DOES have surface sounds and even mild+ distortion in places. The record does NOT stick or jump and plays through effortlessly. Side two plays better than side one, but both sides are quite listenable. After a track or two things all seem to improve and such is the quality of this album and the mix the surface sounds almost seem to drift over the head - you almost get used to it. Now the really important thing is, and this is the truth: The important track with that different unique and rare mix ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ probably plays the best on the whole album. The surface sounds almost seem to vanish in the massive sound and in your face mix, only at the very end do you hear anything unwanted very briefly as the track fades out. This version of ‘TNK’ is very different and has to be heard - hearing this on the genuine article will be better than any shoddy bootleg around. This album is still very much worth owning but if your a fussy collector please do not bid on this unless the price for a top copy is way out or reach and you want it badly. If the price goes high, its not my fault, its the choice of all you bidders out there. As stated I will NOT guarantee or refund on this album.

Track Listing: Taxman, Eleanor Rigby; I’m only sleeping; Love you to; Here, there and everywhere; Yellow submarine; She said; Good day sunshine; And you bird can sing; For no one; Dr Robert; I want to tell you; Got to get you into my life; TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS (original rare deleted version)

Album Played For Grading: Yes.

Final Summary: I know I have not given much detail to the content of this classic album, most interested readers of this will know all there is to know anyway. The condition of this rare copy is more important here - I would love to grade higher, maybe I have slightly undergraded, for sure the cover is really nice and the record plays - and not too badly at that - my regular bidders will know how fussy I am and there is no way I am going to overgrade or hype this up. It has surface noise, there I said it again, but for sure at my minimum selling price for a £400 undervalued album this is bargain bin time. Take your chance. Since submitting this advert I have decided to get this record professionally cleaned on a Moth cleaning machine, this will almost certainly improve this record still further - Mike.
