What is a ‘Fourth Proof’ Sergeant Pepper Cover:
My thanks to Mike at 'oneadayrecords' for the following information - check out his ebay site - he is probably the best seller of prog music on ebay.
Album covers and most-all colour printed matter are made up four colour plates in manufacture. These colours are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. These four basic colours are then printed atop each other in process to give all the other colours as they blend on to the printed sheet. Each colour plate has a reference and many would have seen ‘target registration marks’ that are usually hidden when the cover is made. Here the black plate has retained process text that would normally be deleted before manufacture of the cover hence virtually all ‘Pepper’ covers are seen without this text which in some ways can be classified as an ‘error’. When covers are designed, they go through ‘proof stages’, and this is a ‘Fourth proof’ stage. The ‘AR’ is likely to be the reader’s initials and other characters clerical details.
Vinyl: Heavy duty 1st pressing vinyl. Tracks vary between Very Good(-) to VG (not excellent or mint) - has feathering/hairlines but no feelable scratches.
Cover: '4th proof' text and 'AR D1321' text - see scans. Gatefold fully laminated mono Garrod & Lofthouse cover with the earliest 'patents pending' text at the base of the rear cover - see scan. Has the upper flip-backs inside the gatefold - only 1st pressings have these - later pressings had seams inside the gatefold. No writings/doodles or seam splits. The spine does have some wear. Excellent overall condition.
Original red/white Inner sleeve: Excellent+. No seam splits! This is the 1st pressing inner sleeve with the 'patents applied for' text and the double flip-backs on one side - later inner sleeves just had seams.
Sgt Pepper insert: Near Mint. Darker green 1st pressing insert. Later inserts were a lighter colour green.
Labels: Excellent+. KT Tax Code. 1st Pressing 1/1 matrices.

Gradings......
Mint - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
Excellent - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches.
Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and more significant scratches.
Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise, it may even jump.
Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc
Bad - The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
