The Beach Boys came out with PET SOUNDS and felt great until they hard the Beatles' masterpiece which musically and socially crystalized the 1967 Summer of Love like no other creative document. And there were many stories to compete from. Sidney Poitier's GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, TO SIR WITH LOVE and IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, the advent of the greatest guitar player of all time JIMI HENDRIX (who paid homage to the opening song at Brian Epstein's London Saville Theater), Che Guevara's death in Bolivia sandwiched in between Malcom X's assassination and that of civil rights icon Martin Luther King and the release of magic realism evident in Gabriel Garcia Marquez' 100 Years of Solitude. LSD and other psychedelic drug were in vogue and the Beatles seemed to know how to musically depict the transcendental quality of imagination in exponential contexts.

Rolling Stone magazine had marked this album as the greatest of all time even though people may vote Revolver or Abbey Road if not the White Album as the candidate. Regardless, Pepper is when the band made it clear they were music to be listened to and not only danced to as one musicologist observed in the timeless documentary The Compleat Beatles.
