BEATLES UK - Sgt Pepper, wide spine, odd ‘mothers’ & label error, original mono.

PMC 7027 – original black and yellow Parlophone labels.

A very first UK mono wide spine pressing, featuring:

1. a first UK press Mono flipback sleeve with a ‘8mm wide spine’, measured at its widest point. It is now believed that these flipback ‘wide spine’ Pepper sleeves were the very first to be printed when the LP was first released in the UK back in June 1967. Due to packing storage problems the wide spine sleeves were discontinued in favour of the more familiar, ‘thinner’ spine flipback Pepper sleeves,

2. very unusual collection of ‘mothers’, stamped into the run off groove on side two, see photo, it looks as if the number ‘eight’ has been repeatedly stamped near to and over each other !,

3. side two on the record label, on the word ‘Parlophone’ written in yellow, there appears to be some original EMI ‘touching in’ to the bottom of the letter ‘A’, as a possible result of the original ink etc not printing correctly !,

CONDITION:

THE MAIN SLEEVE: is in near excellent condition, the sleeve is fully laminated. This laminate has an excellent  glossy finish. The original wide spine is in near excellent condition and all the text on the spine is clear to read. The spines width measures 8mm at its widest point. The original exposed two top flipbacks can be seen when the sleeve is opened. There are NO splits, tears, stains, stickers or sticker residue. To the front left, near to the spine, there is some laminate lifting. There are some indentations to the laminate on the rear. To the rear top right, there is a date written, that has long faded with the date, ‘31st May’ !, possibly a pre production sleeve ?.

THE INSERT: the insert is NOT present.

THE INNER SLEEVE: is in very good++ condition and is the original red and white ‘wavy’ pattern sleeve. Theres NO pen writing, stickers or sticker residue. A clean sleeve for its age. There is a split to the bottom edge and a slight split to one side. There is a small ‘nick’, 5mm to the front and  rear opening edge and some light age related marks on the sleeve.

THE RECORD: is in very good  condition. The record is made of the period 1960s, ‘thick, heavy’ vinyl, it has remained dark and glossy.

The matrix are:    XEX  637 - 1      and        XEX  638 - 1,

The mother / stampers are:   ‘ 2  R P T ’  and very usual ‘ ?, see photo, the ‘mothers’ here look like a number of the number ‘8’ stamped around, and over each other !, the ‘stampers’ on side two are:  ‘ROP ’.

THE AUDIO: is excellent, in general side one plays with excellent quiet grooves, with just some light ‘dusty static’ and some light ‘ticks’ heard here and there. Side two, again plays excellent, in general side two with quiet grooves, with just some light ‘dusty static’ and some light ‘ticks’ heard here and there. Even the long exit to the track ‘A day in the life’ has an excellent quiet fade out. The record lays flat on the turntable.

THE LABELS: are in near excellent condition. The letters ‘K T’ are embossed around the spindle hole on side one. The labels are free from any pen writing, stickers or sticker residue.

TO GRADE THE CONDITION OF THE RECORD I AM USING THE OFFICIAL GRADING SYSTEM FROM THE ‘RECORD COLLECTOR’ MAGAZINE.

THE RECORD / SLEEVES ARE THEN PUT INTO A NEW PLASTIC SLEEVE FOR FURTHER PROTECTION.
