The white album was first released in the UK in 1968. First pressings came in a top loading numbered Garrod & Lofthouse gatefold sleeve. When the original top loading sleeves were used up in 1969, they were replaced with a new numbering sequence (side opening) sleeve which lasted until some time in 1970 when the numbers were finally omitted for subsequent pressings.

 

These second pressing labels ceased to have the ‘Sold in the UK’ text but retained both the ‘An EMI recording’ and the ‘Mfd in the UK’ text. Even though these 1969 side openers were only released in stereo, they still retained the mono and stereo catalogue numbers along the spine. Nobody knows for sure how many of these numbered second pressings were made but they are considered to be quite a rarity now - especially those that have 'the earliest 1' matrices on all four sides like this one.

 

Cover: Garrod & Lofthouse 1969 UK 2nd pressing side loader gatefold cover. Embossed 'The Beatles' and numbered. No writings or doodles. Has a half-inch split at the top of the spine and slight storage rippling. No poster or photos. Plain white non poly-lined inner sleeves. Near Excellent condition.

 

Labels: Excellent+.

 

Vinyl: Play tested. Thick vinyl. No skips/jumps on my system. Sides 1, 2 & 3 look and play VG to VG+ overall with a nice sheen and light feathering and marks. Side 4 looks VG(-) with slightly more feathering/marks and plays VG(-) with moderate crackle. All sides do have some crackle on the run-in and elsewhere in the quieter moments. Still remains a thouroughly enjoyable listening experience. Might benefit from a clean to bring up to its best.

      Mint - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.

      Excellent - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.

      Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and light scratches.

      Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and more significant scratches.

      Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise, it may even jump.

      Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc

      Bad - The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
