Yellow Submarine is the tenth album by The Beatles in the United Kingdom, released on Apple Records. It was issued as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, which premiered in Great Britain seven months prior to the album's release. Only one side of the album contains songs performed by the Beatles; of the six, four were previously unissued. "Yellow Submarine" had been simultaneously issued in 1966 as a single and on the album Revolver, and "All You Need Is Love" had been issued as a single in the summer of 1967. The second side features the symphonic film score composed by George Martin, in versions recorded specifically for the album. "All You Need Is Love" appeared in either mono or rechanneled stereo, ('fake stereo') on the US LP Magical Mystery Tour. It debuted in a true stereo mix on LP for this album. American cassette and 8-track tape versions featured "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" as an extra song on side two. Only four new Beatles songs appeared on the album, and two were recorded specifically for the film, "All Together Now" and "Hey Bulldog". "Only a Northern Song" had been recorded during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper, but was set aside from the final running order. "It's All Too Much," like similar numbers recorded immediately following the Sgt. Pepper sessions, was not intended for a specific project. "Hey Bulldog", recorded on 11 February 1968, evolved from an initial intent to shoot a promotional film for the "Lady Madonna" single. "Baby, You're a Rich Man" was also originally intended for the film soundtrack, but was released as the B-side to "All You Need is Love" instead and was not included in the Yellow Submarine album.
In contrast to how the film was received, Yellow Submarine is usually considered The Beatles' weakest release. It was one of the few Beatles releases not to top the charts on either side of the Atlantic. Its highest position was #2 in the US, kept from the top by their own The Beatles, which had been released two months before. The Beatles themselves did not consider it a proper studio album, since they had little involvement in the project, and the four previously unreleased tracks on it were taken hodge-podge fashion from various sessions in 1967 and early 1968.

This is an original 1969 pressing, on the black PARLOPHONE label (Parlophone PCS 7070). Made from UK plates (YEX 715-1 and YEX 716-1), this is a very early pressing made in The Netherlands. But whereas this LP is always found with the customary Apple labels, this particular copy is on BLACK PARLOPHONE labels, which makes this an extraordinarily rare copy. Not unlike the Rubber Soul LP on the black Odeon label, which was also released in this country (less than 10 copies known to exist), this is an edition that never ever crops up, it's that rare. Whether it was made for export purposes (which is a likely scenario) is not 100% known, but fact is that copies of this album are incredibly rare and never show up. In all my 40 years of collecting this is the first time I have a spare copy of this, and I know of 4 other copies, no more!

As with most 1960s albums issued in Holland, this Beatles LP comes in a UK produced cover (flipback). This is the rarer version with the red lines on the rear and a Patent No. (943,895) on the back, as well as the release numbers for both the Stereo (PCS 7070) as the Mono (PMC 7070) editions.

The cover is in an EX condition. The corners are very sharp (there is a mild dent in the upper left corner - see scan) and the parts where the cover is not laminated (there are always a few mm's which are not covered by laminate and these are prone to getting dirty) are absolutely clean. There are a few very light creases, but generally the cover is in a solid EX condition with no writing, no tears, no damage, no major wear.

The disc is in an amazing Near Mint condition, there are no scratches, no jumps, no sticks, the grooves are not worn, it shines like the day it was released and probably has had only very few plays. It is in a splendid NM condition. The labels are absolutely clean, no writing, no wear, no damage, just some very superficial spindle wear- it is obvious that this copy has been taken care of; a real keeper!
