The Beatles
The International Battle of the Century - The Beatles vs. The Four Seasons
Original August 1964 US double LP set
VG+ condition!

Here is a very nice Vee-Jay 2 LP set which was originally issued in August, 1964. This set was one of Vee-Jay's last attempts to repackage 12 Beatles songs they had rights to before Capitol regained them in October of that year. The compilation brought together two previously released VJ LPs--"Introducing the Beatles" and "Golden Hits of the Four Seasons"--into a deluxe package with a poster. The concept was for the listener to compare each of the 12 Beatles songs vs. the corresponding 12 Four Seasons songs and score each on the back cover. The "winner" was determined by adding up the scores in each of the columns and writing the name of the winning group in the blank. Surviving copies with covers in VG+ to MINT condition are scarce since fans that bought the set usually couldn't help but fill out the "scorecard" on the back cover! It's hard to believe, but we recently found a copy where the winner on the back cover was the Four Seasons! The 2 LP set sold poorly when released since most Beatle fans weren't inclined to pay a "deluxe" price for songs they already owned despite the intriguing packaging. Consequently, Vee-Jay only sold approximately 18,000 mono copies.

This cover is one of the nicest copies we've ever offered for sale. It is in VG+ condition and has no writing (or pencil/pen impressions) anywhere on the back (there is a small bit of writing in the lower right corner of the front which has been partially erased but it is not very noticable). Other than some slight ringwear and a light scratch across the Four Seasons photo box on the front the cover is very nice. All seams are completely intact (see photos) with just a minor 1/2" repair to one of the top seams. Both LPs are in VG+ condition with some remaining sheen and clean matched labels. The set includes two clean original "Great Recorded Talent is on VJ" red paper inner sleeves.

The poster included is not an original, but a professionally reproduced copy from the very rare UNTRIMMED poster proof! Vee-Jay produced a small amount of proof posters in the initial press run to check the color balance and ultimately for use as promotional displays. These posters had dimensions slightly larger than the final product and most were laminated onto cardboard. They are extremely rare since less than 50 are known to have survived. We have an unlaminated original proof poster in our possession which we color-corrected and reproduced onto matte paper--just like the original. The end result is a poster which is stunning and far superior to an original since it is properly color balanced and ~25% larger. Beware of other repro posters which are done on 11" x 17" paper. This one measures approx. 12 1/4" x 24 3/4"!

There are hardly any issues to detract from the the overall excellent presentation of this rare and collectible set.
Both LPs come in Discwasher-style Japanese rice-paper sleeves. The LP cover comes in a Japanese resealable sleeve.
