Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean and highly attractive with only a couple of ultra light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Another from that collection of barely played records, this is not even ‘run-in’ in vinyl terms and a much better copy of this scarce record will be difficult to find.

Cat Number: DAN 8006.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 118 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Is there a category ‘Progressive-folk’?, well if not, there should be for this title. The second of two albums this specialist 12-string guitarist made for John Peel’s Dandelion label. A superb album it is too and here backed by the mighty Tractor (formerly, The Way We Live). A more varied album than the previous one this is less folky and more psychedelic. The highlight is the album’s finale: ‘Silence Returns’ which quiet and calm until suddenly out of nowhere comes a blistering fuzz-acid guitar solo by Milne that almost rips off the speaker-cloth. A stunning tour-de-force and what a way to go out. In music terms little was heard of this man again as he turned his skills to producing. Like most albums on the label, it did not sell well and most titles are elusive. John Peel the famous and much-missed radio DJ started this small independent ‘progressive’ label as a labour-of-love mainly to give little-known acts such as Beau the chance to record. Commercial potential was little and most acts on Dandelion had little chance of breaking on to a major label. Arguably the best were the aforementioned The Way We Live who then changed their name to Tractor – they made two albums on Peel’s label and both are stunning and truly essential. The duo back Beau on this album which almost make it a third Tractor album. This is a superb copy with a strong cover which lacks the usual heavy wear. The record has barely been played, side one is immaculate and side two just has three hairline surface marks with no sound - a rare blemish on a record from this collection but totally superficial and minor. For fans of this cult label, a better sounding copy will prove near impossible to find - Beau this is a Beaut!!

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+.

Cover Grade and Format: Very strong EX and worthy of higher for a cover that’s rarely seen half as good. A single, somewhat flimsy unlaminated format that was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Very attractive and largely devoid of the usual rubbing these dark unlaminates usually suffer. Any rub marks are faint and any present only really show with angled viewing. Just a couple of very small lightweight surface creases and no fading to the attractive artwork. Slight rubbing on the spine fold edge but the lack of deep penetrating ringwear is a major bonus. This will prove very difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is fantastic with little to fault, the odd minor rub trace or mark but look hard to find them. Barely any creasing or rubbing and exceptionally clean too. Like the front, this will take a lot of beating too.

Top Edge: Very faint rub traces only.

Bottom Edge: Slight rubbing but will show less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering. Viewed end-on, it will show just how thin thin this card is, this has remained incredibly neat and guaranteed, untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: Solid but made very thin. Straight, uncompressed with the ends quite deeply pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing to the fragile surface is ultra tiny faint.

Corners: Tip rubs is almost the least anyone could expect on this one. Here small and all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: EX+, plain white but now moderately darkened with age. This has very large bottom corner opening vents which are quite unusual looking. If not for the ageing discolour, this could have been graded Mint.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) / EX+, A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Side one could easily pass for new, side two has three fine hairline surface marks that have no sound at all and this record plays superbly from start to finish. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce Dandelion record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first copy on vinyl. This piece will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
