We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over +22,000 positive feedback. We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Sought Original 1968 first pressing of the very first Tangerine Zoo album, one of thee major fuzz-garage collectibles from the USA sixties scene...
Boston psychedelic band the Tangerine Zoo formed in 1967 in nearby Swansea, MA.
Guitarist Robert "Benny" Benevides, bassist Tony Taveira, and drummer Donald Smith first collaborated in the Ebb Tides, which the previous year issued "My Baby's Gone" on the Arco label. With the additions of singer/guitarist Wayne Gagnon and keyboardist Ronald Medeiros, the group renamed itself the Flower Pot, abandoning the Ebb Tides' garage rock sound in favor of a more psychedelic approach. In addition to serving as the house band at the local Venus de Milo restaurant, the band also opened for the likes of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Van Morrison, and Deep Purple. Their growing popularity led by a large fan base in Boston 1967 were quickly signed with the highly collected "Mainstream" label.
While recording their FIRST LP, label execs demanded another name change, fearing backlash from the obvious marijuana reference in the Flower Pot moniker; after setting on the Tangerine Zoo, the group released its self-titled debut in early 1968.
Opening the album with an intense cover of THEM's Gloria, reworked into a 6-minute epic, with swirly Hammond and feedback-drenched psychedelic fuzz o-plenty and the band manage to stamp their own style on this classic, in a much more interesting way than the renowned Vanilla Fudge - bringing it well and truly into the Summer of Love, albeit 6 months later.
Swathes of the Doors dynamic and aggressive style make the track stand out from the standard "Love and Peace" fare, with tightly controlled breakdowns, solos from everyone creating a far-out, frenzied atmosphere.
If you thought that was good, it's the next track that's the real beginning of the treats; "Trip to the Zoo" is so thinly disguised it's laughable, with booming bass-lines created in a jazz-flavor -- to the heavy freakout music that is to follow, and lyrics like "They pick my brain, brain, brain, brain" leaving you in no doubt what sort of trip they were having - but leaving the listener a little mystified as to what actually happened at the zoo... This track is pure musical LSD - you don't need to take anything, except this album at ear-splitting volume, just as was intended to be heard. But if you do listen loudly/intently, make sure your head is screwed on tightly. The musical mind expansion continues with the next track - something that sounds like a glass harmonica provides an eerie opening to an angsty, bluesy tale of woe relating something akin to Stockhalm Syndrome, as the Hammond organ ripples and sweeps menacingly through something that sounds not unlike the roots of Progressive Rock, reminding particularly of the unsung Scottish band Clouds (formerly 1-2-3), who supported Jimi Hendrix Experience on some of their British gigs - clearly Hendrix's booking agents had a taste for this kind of unpredictable, wild and progressive music.
"Nature's Child" is a title that summons up visions of trippy hippie music, and this is again is closer to the sound of the Doors, with plenty of rock energy, dynamic, with more of an angst melancholy, concerning world of destruction. Here the organ/guitar leads are pushed to recording equipment breaking point, as ice-pick jams ringing out, threatening to shatter tweeters and ear drums simultaneously.
"The Flight" is more of the same as the above, you'll be glad to hear - great, foot-tapping no-nonsense psychedelic rock with plenty of Hammond organ swirls, thumping bass lines and feedback-drenched fuzz guitar sizzling's.
"Mommy and Daddy" is rather odd, though, having a kind of United Kingdom flavored jammer following a childish Syd Barrett-inspired vocal section - what's this all about?
Just part of a very odd trip, as the music continues into "Symphonic Psyche", a rather manic piece designed for hungry heads - and very catchy. Shoulda been a hit!
The last two tracks, the imaginatively titled "Crystalline Heaven" and the less imaginatively "One More Heartache" a more easy-tempo, then the manic uptempo rocker respectively, make a fine ending to a very rounded and very capable first album which really should have commanded a lot more recognition than it ever got, especially when you put this GEM up against some the others caught-on as 'expensive' rare sixties underground-rock
