Recorded and released exclusively in Japan, this lavishly packaged double live album commences as it intends to finish - with breath taking slabs of hard rock firepower. Stripped down to basics, the three piece wrecking machine kicks into gear with a wickedly powerful interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s funk rock classic, ‘Superstition’, before slipping into something a little more primal, a crushing version of ‘Lose Myself With You’, a song that had previously been performed by Cactus. Both ‘Jeff’s Boogie’ and Don Nix’s ‘Going Down’ continue the avalanche of power but the icing on the cake must surely be the mindless and, it must be said, rather succinctly titled, ‘Boogie’. The track is little more than a charging heavy rock rant attached to elephantine riffs with Appice doing his very best to smash the drums to a pulp.

 

‘Morning Dew’, a brilliant song in any style and one covered by a number of artists, including Tim Rose, temporarily alleviates the assault but the pressure is soon reapplied with ‘Livin’ Alone’, which opens like a Led Zeppelin out-take, with its big bad blues riffs, and  ‘Black Cat Moan’, featuring an extended interlude of Willie Dixon’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’, further enhancing the Zeppelin comparisons. Perhaps the most intriguing track performed is ‘Plynth/Shotgun’ originally recorded by the Jeff Beck Group.

 

Admittedly, this album is both weighty and gruelling, especially during the extended guitar, bass and drum solos, but the sheer power of this hand-picked collective is, on most occasions, overwhelmingly impressive.

 

Only issued in Japan as a double live album. This copy is immaculate.

Pressing: Epic, UK, 1973 - yellow label original

Vinyl: Super clean virtually unplayed condition - I would say played once if at all. No spindle marks and no other signs of use. Grades as archive MINT!

Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated gold embossed textured gatefold cover complete with Obi strip and rare four page insert. Sharp corners, a couple of micro dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is perfect - straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Looks like it walked out of the factory yesterday. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 50 years after release. Grades as MINT-!
