Los Angeles' finest Beck leans to a rural Americana sound on Ride Lonesome, the visionary indie icon's 15th studio album and first since 2019. The title track benefits from a high dose of vocal reverb, pedal steel overtones and softly-strummed acoustic guitar chords. Elsewhere, 'In The Night' feels more expansive and luxurious with orchestral strings and a gentle pastoral psych haze that feels more akin to British 60s psych folk than country music. It's a refreshing break from the detailed electronica experimentations that have characterized the bulk of his work this century to hearing him embrace something a little more handmade and simplistic. Few artists can make understated songs sound this effortless. He's still operating on a level all of his own.
