Description
Very rare set of five (5) 78 RPM records recorded in September of 1928. Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Franz Schalk. His Master's Voice, catalog No. D 1473 through 1477, 5-0911 through 5-0920.
Ludwig Van Beethoven, Op. 68 The "Pastoral" Symphony, Symphony No. 6 in F Major
Box is completely intact, but has some minor fraying on spine. Also looks to have some water damage, particularly on the back (see photo #2). Green inner sleeves are free of rips/tears. Records are glossy with intact labels on all ten (10) sides. I only took pictures of one side of each record (sides 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9).
I have no way of playing 78 RPM records, so I cannot say how well these records will sound. I also did not clean them except to wipe them down with a microfiber cloth and a little water as I do not have the proper cleaning solution (free of alcohol) for 78's. This set was part of a large classical collection of a Dutch-German immigrant couple who took excellent care of their records.

"Schalk is best remembered nowadays as the desecrator of his teacher Bruckner’s symphonies in an earnest if misguided attempt to conform them to audience expectations but, as Jean-Charles Hoffelé points out, he strove for simplicity in his conducting as well – as a conservative antidote and successor to Mahler at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic, he forbade vibrato, refrained from portamento, reduced expressive and ornamental glissandi to a bare minimum, and generally adhered to a single tempo for entire movements. While the steady first movement here exemplifies this simplicity of approach, the second is far different, its patient charm full of subtle tempo shifts; it even culminates with arhythmic birdcalls that impart a sense of nature in the raw more than conscious stylization. In one sense, it broke new ground – the first Pastoral on record to have included the third-movement repeat (but not the first)."
