1930’s 78’s Heavy Vinyl Record Set in Original Booklet Case with original Columbia insert on the Quartet
Recorded by the Lener String Quartet – of Hungarian origin, and founded in Budapest in 1918, operated in or from London before World War II. They appeared at the Royal Albert Hall, London on three occasions between 1922 and 1926. The Léner Quartet made the first complete recorded cycle of Beethoven quartets.
The String Quartet No. 14 in C Sharp Minor 131, was completed by Beethoven in 1826. It is the last-composed of a trio of string quartets, written in the order 132, 130, 131.
It was Beethoven's favourite: he is quoted as remarking to a friend that he would find "a new manner of part-writing and, thank God, less lack of imagination than before". It is said that upon listening to a performance of this quartet, Shubert remarked, "After this, what is left for us to write?"
The condition of all Five 78’s are Very Good Plus. They have clearly received only light use, and the Columbia Graphophone Labels are Excellent. Under halogen light only very feint blemishes on all sides of each of the five vinyl's which still retain a good lustre. Complete and intact, heavy original 78’s with no warps or scuffs.
All sides have 1G stamper codes, meaning this set was one of the first from the Columbia manufacturing plant, way back in the 1930’s.
The sound reproduction is Excellent Minus, and they have been tested on modern equipment with lightweight stylus pickup on a 78 rpm setting. There is some light crackle in the background during playback as to be expected, otherwise great detailed clear audio.
Very rare set in this condition, especially to find the case in Excellent condition being nearly 90 years old, with just a few marks but no other faults throughout.
Will be delivered in a deep record mailer with stifferners, cushioning and each record sealed separately in inner sleeves so as to not damage the booklet slots.
