Description

This 1961 single release listing is an opportunity to get a copy of a famous 1960s’ cult rock ballad’s first UK release in its original company sleeve. "Stand by Me" is the song originally performed by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King, written by King with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. There have been over 400 recorded versions performed by many artists.

This recording went to No. 1 on the R&B charts and was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. charts twice—in its original release, entering the Billboard on May 13, 1961 and peaking at 4 on June 16, 1961.  The 1986 re-release coinciding with its use as the theme song for the movie of the same name peaked at 9 and was also used in an advertisement for Levi Jeans. In this form, it reached No 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1987 mostly because of the jeans ad.  Originally it had only reached 27 on the UK chart making this original issue a comparatively rare copy.

This 7 inch 45 RPM single record was the very first UK pressing.  Its condition shows that the previous owner[s] took incredible care of it over the last 56 years.  The playing surfaces retain all of their original vinyl shine.  The listening experience is brilliant and there are no clicks or background noise.  The labels are clean with no writing on either side.
