A splendid little live album. Evidently an impromptu recording choice, it's blessing that the tapes were ready to roll on that October 1960 night. Well, almost ready. Listeners are uncharacteristically treated to engineers trying balance the sound levels on track one. Still, the band is in fine form and the mix is spacious. Ben Webster's sax is on point, Jimmy Rowles throws in the right amount of piano and Red Mitchell walks across the neck of the bass. They cook up some unexpectedly focused music. But the biggest surprise here is Frank Butler's popping drums. I'd been aware of his drumming on the transitional Miles Davis record Seven Steps to Heaven. On that outing, his slack and laid-back approach to time was deemed unsatisfactory by Miles himself. With Webster and Co., he takes the lead and the rest of the group grooves along just fine. My only gripe is that Jim Hall's guitar only really becomes noticeable late in the game. His solo on "Mop Top" (which was not on the original LP) is a classic example of expressive jazz guitar soloing. But we could have had way more. Again, a minor quibble on a fine little album that just as easily could have simply never happened.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in a hi-grade PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          In addition, the record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Minor loss of surface sheen along the top and bottom seams (BARELY VISIBLE) where the previous owner taped the seams needlessly (the tape has since been fully and completely removed)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
