Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. He would soon permanently move to Europe where he was better appreciated.
1964 jazz classic by Webster with Hank Jones, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Grady Tate, Phil Bodner and Thad Jones. One of AP's Impulse re-issue titles: 180 Gram vinyl, half speed mastered from original analog tape, Cut at 45 RPM with deluxe gatefold sleeve. A treat for fans of great jazz and/or audiophiles!

Review: On SEE YOU AT THE FAIR, we hear a mature Ben Webster performing with both a quartet and a nonet, featuring arrangements of tunes such as "Midnight Blue" and "Blues For Mr. Broadway" by Oliver Nelson. Webster's thick, often coarse, tone is heard on many of his solos, including "In a Mellow Tone," and the mid-tempo title track "See You At the Fair."
Coleman Hawkins' influence is quite apparent even on such later recordings as this. However, on ballads such as "Over the Rainbow" and "Stardust" we hear a lush, relaxed approach, one that earned Webster the title of one of the great instrumental balladeers in jazz history. A compelling listen, SEE YOU AT THE FAIR is one of Webster's best later period releases, as well as his last recording made in the United States.
