Description

For sale - from my personal collection - the following LP by legendary jazz tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader BENNY GOLSON (born 1929), titled:

"TAKE A NUMBER FROM 1 TO 10"

original 1961 pressing on Argo Records LP 681, MONOAURAL, made in USA. Plain paper inner sleeve. Special black printing on dark gray Argo label. Tiny punch hole near the upper left corner of cover possibly indicating PROMO release.

CONDITION:

- front cover is NM overall (shiny, beautiful; no ring wear; has a little amount of fading in the center area, hardly visible)

- back cover is NM

- vinyl is close to NM side one (having a few sleeve marks and scuffs) and NM side two

Record was cleaned and tested, playing as close as possible to MINT.

PERSONNEL: Benny Golson (tenor saxophone solo on track one), Benny Golson (tenor saxophone on tracks 2-10) with 1 musician added for each subsequent track starting with track 2 (such as Benny Golson with Tommy Williams) and ending with 9 musicians added for track 10. Hence the album title "Take a number from 1 to 10" meaning that the number of featured musicians is from 1 to 10 depending on the track number. Among musicians a few jazz titans, such as Cedar Walton, Freddy Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Art Farmer. Great concept jazz album.

MUSIC & COMMENTS: early modern bebop with occasional blues-ballad elements. 10 tracks, starting with "You're my thrill" and ending with "Time". Studio recordings (Dec. 13 and 14, 1960; April 11, 1961, Nola Studios, New York). Recording engineer Tommy Nola. Produced by Kay Norton. One of the Benny Golson's most interesting and special albums ever released. A MUST-HAVE JAZZ ALBUM SHOWCASING BENNY GOLSON'S SPECIAL PLAY, ARRANGEMENTS AND INTEGRATION FROM SOLO TO A 10-MEMBER JAZZ COMBO. Unique jazz album from the history.
