This 1947 double 78 album was released by Circle Records during the first wave of interest in older "historic" jazz and blues, and many record labels, legitimate ones and fly-by-night ones like Circle, were reissuing much of the hard-to-find music from the 1920s. This Bessie Smith record is of particular interest, as it is not a reissue, but in a way the FIRST issue ever of Bessie Smith's 1929 long recording of St. Louis Blues, which was recorded for a rare short film made that year. This was an unusual recording for her, as it was long, and included a choir! It was only ever heard in this film until the collectors at Circle Records got their hands on it and made this record using the film soundtrack. Two records, four sides, St. Louis Blues parts 1-4. There were very few copies made of any of these Circle records, as they were a very small company with a small audience.
The discs are in beautiful E condition, showing some signs of use and a superficial scuff or two, but really not damaged, scratched, or worn at all. Both these records play just about perfectly. A beautiful listen. The cover is also in excellent condition, with a little label taped to the bottom of the spine, but otherwise just minor shelfwear. And there is a historic Jazz Man Record Shop stamp on the inner sleeve! A great and rare copy.
