Some 30 years and 27 albums into their career, Nick Saloman and The Bevis Frond return with Horrorful Heights; one of the band's most accessible records for some time. The sprawling twenty-song tracklist might initially appear daunting, particularly when you know that Saloman has a habit of following his internal muse whilst jumping across moods and genres as he does so. Yet, there's a warmth that seeps out of these soft-focused tunes that is hard to not be entranced by. The Bob Mould influenced chugging grunge pop of 'That's Your Lot' possesses more attitude and energy than it perhaps has any right to. It might find Saloman considering his mortality, but even though there's melancholy at the heart of the song, it still possesses a positivity and determination. Elsewhere there are country and folk influences, straight-up pop attack ('Draining The Bad Blood'), Byrds influenced rock ('Buffaloed'), and sitar-led psychedelic hypno-folk ('Horrorful Heights'). This is not a disjointed adventure however, this is an album that revels in music of all forms and that showcases Saloman's incredible songwriting ability.
