BOG BOYS a quartet that puts Texas hardcore on the map, fuses a bit of funk with their punk.

Coming out of the then-overlooked Austin, TX, punk scene of the early '80s, the Big Boys 

combined two irresistible rock styles into one feverish mix: raging, speedy guitars and fat, 

funky backbeats. And although they went on to make a few so-so recordings, never really 

living up to their early promise, it's difficult not to be supportive of what the Big Boys tried 

to do in the start of the hardcore era, wherein the sexiness of a funky rhythm section 

disappeared amongst the ultra-fast tempos and sexless pummeling 

THE DICKS, one of the Texas hardcore bands from the early '80s, alongside the Big Boys, were the 

national scene's voice from the Lone Star state. Formed in Austin in 1980, the Dicks 

released their first and most famous single; Hate the Police, shortly thereafter. 

The track, which would later get a most reverential treatment by quasi-grunge 

hucksters Mudhoney, is considered one of the best from the heyday of American hardcore. 

Their debut, a live split LP with fellow Texans the Big Boys, Live at Raul's Club was released in 1980

The Big Boys' half of this split release (the other went to fellow local legends Dicks) shows 

it was a smart decision to get a good live recording of the band. While some still debate 

whether the group's studio recordings adequately capture the Boys at their best, if reports 

are right, there's no question that when it came to live stuff they could slay any venue 

in which they played. None of the seven selections have ended up on other releases 

to date either, making this an even more compelling listen. Randy "Biscuit" Turner's rough 

but ready voice pulls off both soul power and whispery nervousness just right; when 

he details a stalker's mind in "Psycho," the song may be a bit hammy, but as an overall 

performance he nails it. His occasional between-song asides can be fun and pointed 

as well. As for the other musicians, probably their only peers would have been 

Gang of Four; the same sense of fractured art-funk and punk power comes through, 

with Tim Kerr's skittering, abrupt guitar lines feeding off Gates' bass rumble 

and then-new member Greg Murray's fine, perfect drumming...(AllMusic)
