SAVOY 10” MG 15045


This is a exemplary copy of pioneer honkin’ and screamin’ R&B saxophonist Big Jay McNeeley’s ‘Plays a Rhythm and Blues Concert’ on Savoy, catalog number MG 15045. 


RECORD: NM


Surface is shiny and clean. I cannot see any significant marks or scuffs. 


Matrix numbers: Side A: MG 15045A, there is also a ‘B’ and ‘1’ in dead wax. Side B: MG 1045B, there is also a ‘B’ and ‘1’ in dead wax.


There are no track bands on the record, each side plays continuously.


Heavy weight with ‘deep groove’ 


PLAYBACK: 


I’ve played the whole record through. I did not register a single crackle or pop. The pressing has some inherent hiss, there are also ‘live’ audience noises that sound like they are overdubbed. BUT the performance is smokin’ and when you EQ a little of the treble the sound is visceral and punchy.  Again, the record is visually near mint, and the sound quality is inherent in the pressing.


LABELS: EX


Silver print is crisp and shiny.  Side A has the same ‘NRW’ stamp, otherwise there is no writing anywhere. There are only a couple of spindle trails on each side, indicating that this record was played only a few times. 


JACKET: VG+


Noted issues: The front image is clean and the surface still has most of its gloss. Faintly dinged upper left corner. Small 1/4” chip on right opening. Top and left seams fully intact. Bottom seam has a small 1 1/2” split near the sleeve opening.  The back is clean with some yellowing from age. No writing. ‘NRW’ stamp in black ink in lower right, which I believe was something done at the factory as I’ve seen it on other early Savoy records.
