From a well cared for jazz / blues collection the records are unmarked and my highest grade of near mint. Records have no sign of play.
The Gatefold Sleeve has no splits or rips and near mint – no rips or splits. Looks like it’s just outta the Record Shop – probably the best one on eBay!
A 2-LP set of 2 albums Big Mama recorded in 1969 for the Mercury label. The albums brought her name into the consciousness of the American mainstream public for the first time in her life. The recognition it brought her resulted in Mercury bankrolling a second album, ‘The Way It Is’, a recording that captured her in concert. It wasn’t as successful as her Mercury debut, prompting the label and singer to part company soon after. A spirited woman armed with a big personality and formidable stage presence, Big Mama Thornton, like her idol Bessie Smith before her, brought to the blues – so often a male preserve – a female perspective. Her music touched not only Janis Joplin but also several blues singers who followed the trail she blazed, like Etta James, Ruth Brown, Sandra Hall etc. She only made three more albums after that, dying in 1984 from alcoholism at the age of 57.
