Big Star - 3rd LP
Surfacing from the depths of the Decade That Taste Forgot, Big Star was arguably the only band that was still making listenable rock and roll during the 1970s. While other acts were becoming operatic, limpid, or unlistenably bizarre and pretentious, Big Star strayed none too far in spirit from Memphis, Tennessee. Perhaps this is why they barely sold any records, ending up in the dreaded "cut out bin." But because the universe is Just, the band is now respected by musicians and music fans alike, and their original-issue LPs are in demand. Without Big Star, would there have been R.E.M. or The Replacements? Maybe, but what would they have sounded like? I suppose we'll never know, and maybe we don't want to.
In 1971, Alex Chilton, who sang vocals on a hit record when he was barely 16 years old ("The Letter" by The Box Tops), joined Chris Bell's band, Ice Water. They changed the name to Big Star and to celebrate, started an unceasing battle over the band's direction. Perhaps genius comes from unrest.
This album is the original issue entitled "3rd", later released as "Sister Lovers" with the title referring to Chilton and Bell having dated a pair of sisters during the time the album was being recorded. Pete Tomlinson wrote the liner notes, AND he autographed this copy. His note says, "To Rich - Thanks for your support, you jock you. Born to be mild, Pete Tomlinson." Released in 1978 on PVC records. VERY rare find!
Vinyl is in Excellent condition. Sleeve and original inner sleeve (with liner notes) are in VG condition. The autograph, by Pete Tomlinson, is on the bottom left hand side of the back cover. Please note there is a "cut out" in the sleeve.
