Rare PROMO from Ardent
Next to the Velvet Underground, Memphis's Big Star is the granddaddy of all cult groups. The crisp, succinct pop found on their first two albums was ignored upon release in the early '70s, but by the '80s, Big Star's sound was everywhere. Everyone from the dB's, R.E.M., and the Replacements to Tommy Keene, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, and Primal Scream has integrated Big Star's formula into their own styles, and this has turned Big Star co-founder Alex Chilton into a cult icon.
The group was formed by Chris Bell in 1971 and, in addition to singer/guitarists Chilton and Bell, featured bassist Andy Hummell and drummer Jody Stephens. Although Bell was living in the home of the blues and soul, it was the Anglo-pop stylings of the Beatles and the Kinks that rang his bell. Alex Chilton, former vocalist for the Box Tops, shared Bell's affection for Brit-pop and joined the group, re christened Big Star after a local supermarket chain.
This single was the band's second promo 45 and had a pair of songs from their release "#1 Record.' The songs listed on this promo single are "Don't Lie To Me" and "Watch The Sunrise." But a fan will easily spot that instead of "Don't Lie To Me" the 45 is pressed up with the song "Thirteen" in its place. This is a rare and much sought after variation of this 45rpm never sold to the public. The song “Thirteen” was never released as a 45 by Big Star – except by accident here. This was sent out to radio in February of 1973.
