BILL EVANS Riverside RLP-9376 SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD 45RPM 2LP’S. The Bill Evans Trio, Analogue Productions Limited Original Edition 0131 out of (1000).  RARE & Out OF PRINT, Stereo. I bought the entire series in 2014 opened and played ONLY ONCE. Vinyl Condition: (Side 1) M-, (Side 2) M-, (Side 3) M-, (Side 4) M-. Jacket Condition: M-. Bill Evans, piano; (Featuring) Scott LaFaro, bass; Paul Motian, drums. Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York City; June 25, 1961. Produced by Orrin Keepnews. Anyone who has experienced the playing of Bill Evans is aware of his deep feelings and the great clarity with which he communicates them. Also evident to the listener who has followed Evan’s progress on Riverside is the constant striving for a real group projection where each man improvises and all three do it together. Here, there is an inter-relation of melodic and rhythmic phrases actively involving everyone. The freshness of the Evan’s trio’s approach music with a truly magical aura.

Scott La Faro died in a car accident on July 6, 1961 at the age of 25, 2 weeks after the recording of Sunday at the Vanguard.  Scott’s death was devastating to Evan’s.Today all the trio members have died, Bill at 51, died on Sept. 15, 1980 & Paul Motian, drummer died on No. 11, 2011 at age 80. Record Producer, Orrin Keepnews died on March 1, 2015 at age 91.

Eugene Marlow, Ph.D., a neighbor remembers Bill Evans: “Despite his success as a jazz artist, Evans suffered personal loss and struggled with drug abuse. Both his girlfriend Ellaine and his brother Harry committed suicide, and he was a long time user of heroin and latter of cocaine. As a result, his financial stability, personal relationships and musical creativity suffered until his death, in 1980. Evans friend, Canadian music critic and biographer, Gene Lees described Evan’s struggle with drugs as “the longest suicide in history”. He was interred in Baton Rouge, next to his brother Harry. The question to be asked is: does greatness, particularly in the musical realm, have to be tinged by self-destructive behavior for greatness to emerge? Or does the two go hand-in-hand?
