Review
by Scott Yanow
The first of two studio albums by the Bill Evans-Scott LaFaro-Paul Motian trio (both of which preceded their famous engagement at the Village Vanguard), this Portrait in Jazz reissue contains some wondrous interplay, particularly between pianist Evans and bassist LaFaro, on the two versions of "Autumn Leaves." Other than introducing Evans' "Peri's Scope," the music is comprised of standards, but the influential interpretations were far from routine or predictable at the time. LaFaro and Motian were nearly equal partners with the pianist in the ensembles and their versions of such tunes as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "When I Fall in Love," and "Someday My Prince Will Come" (which preceded Miles Davis' famous recording by a couple years) are full of subtle and surprising creativity. A gem.

AND, LASTLY, PLEASE DO REMEMBER SOUND QUALITY IS AFFECTED BY WHAT THE VINYL IS PLAYED ON! IF YOUR STEREO SYSTEM HAS BEEN CAREFULLY CHOSEN AND ASSEMBLED FOR IT'S AURAL QUALITIES AND YOU PERFORM BASIC MAINTENANCE LIKE CLEANING YOUR VINYL, CLEANING THE NEEDLE AFTER EACH PLAY, AND REPLACING THE CARTRIDGE WHEN NEEDED, YOUR LPS SHOULD SOUND QUITE GOOD.

PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT CONDITIONS OF SALE:
GRADING & POLICIES: ALL RECORDS ARE VISUALLY GRADED AND THE RED GRADE REFERS ONLY TO THE STATE OF VINYL......YOU PLAY THE VINYL AND NOT THE COVER....COVER IS NOTED SEPARATELY. IF I'VE LISTENED TO THE LP IT WILL BE NOTED. The following is a general overview about grades, subject to any above notations: MINT indicates pristine vinyl without any marks on surface. MINT MINUS may contain a few very light surface rub marks from play or sleeve wear under light. If you are a real collector, you'll know that even a factory sealed LP occasionally has some light sleeve or rub marks. Anything in the VG category would contain some light and fine surface play lines and or have some other visible signs of ring or hole wear. Rarely do I offer something in the "G" state. If I do, it's usually a rare LP and priced accordingly. Values are assigned according to market availability, rarity and my experience in the business for over 25 years, not a price guide or any other standard.

PAYMENT: PAYPAL ONLY ACCEPTED AND SHOULD BE MADE WITHIN 24 HOURS OF SALE END (IF YOU BID ON SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED TO PAY FOR IT). IF PAYING BY PAYPAL E-CHECK PLEASE ADVISE BEFORE BIDDING. I like to ship your records out within 2-3 days of payment, so using PAYPAL gets the records to you ASAP and concludes the transaction. Contact me after the auction if your PAYPAL payment will be delayed so I know what's going on. FOREIGN CUSTOMERS: The 1st LP is $16 for 1st class airmail, each additional LP is $4 (up to a total of four, five and over need priority and the price almost doubles). IF YOU CAN NOT EDIT THE EBAY OR PAYPAL CHECKOUT TO REFLECT FOUR DOLLARS FOR EACH EXTRA LP, PLEASE PAY THE $16 AIRMAIL CHARGE EACH TIME AND THE EXCESS POSTAGE WILL BE REFUNDED BACK TO YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT UPON RECEIPT OF YOUR PAYPAL PAYMENT.

ALL LPS ARE SHIPPED WITH A NEW PLASTIC OUTER SLEEVE SURROUNDED BY 2 NEW CORRUGATED PACKING SQUARES(50 cents each) INSIDE A NEW CORRUGATED LP MAILER($1.50 each) WITH FRAGILE STICKERS OUTSIDE TO ENSURE THE LP ARRIVES JUST AS IT LEFT AND THAT IS $2.50 BESIDES POSTAGE!

YOUR SATISFACTION: Your positive feedback and excellent seller rating of 5 in each category is very important to me. I try to give as much detail as possible about appearance and condition. Should your purchase not meet your expectations please contact me before leaving feedback and detailed seller rating. YOUR SATISFACTION IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE TO ME. Do you know how the Ebay Seller Ratings System works? Did you know that even a 4 rating is a bad rating for a seller? With most rating systems of 1 to 5(highest), you would expect a "4" to be a very good rating and a "5" to be an excellent/highest rating. You purchase an item on Ebay and the product, service, communications or fees were very good but not great. You give the seller all 4's thinking this is very good.(Most rating systems equate 1=lowest, 2=fair, 3=good, 4=very good, 5=highest). Unfortunately this is not how it works on EBAY as of May 2008. ONLY A "5" IS A GOOD RATING. The lowest acceptable average for each category is 4.6; below that a seller receives a "NEEDS WORK" and their standings in the listings are lowered. SURPRISING BUT TRUE AND SEEMINGLY UNFAIR.
