"THE new BILL EVANS ALBUM keeps changing." So read the half page ad on in the November 25, 1971 issue of the music magazine ROLLING STONE, and they were right about this collection of Evans' originals, for which he won TWO Grammy awards that year. It's like a whole bunch of new albums in one album, the ad continued. The sessions do have that special imprint of Bill's compositional genius, and in its own way, the effect of the whole sounds like its "always changing" -- due, I suppose, to the ever-whirling colorful content of Bill's tunes.

THE BILL EVANS ALBUM is one of the pianist's strongest with Bill clearly in coherent and melodic form, playing all his own compositions on acoustic and electric piano. This trio session (with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell) remains as fresh today as it was in 1971. Bill's singular vision, flawless line construction, lavish chordal tapestries , trio interplay, and the timeless beauty of his compositions are just a few of the reasons why twenty years after his death, pianists still wrestle with understanding his musical conception and approach. This album represents that conception more clearly than any other, and should be studied by all serious jazz pianists. Other than that, it's one of the most enjoyable to listen to. The recording engineering is exquisite.

THE TONY BENNETT & BILL EVANS ALBUM FANTASY STEREO ISSUE F-9489

Bill Evans rarely accompanied singers. He did not consider it one of his accomplishments. An expert on accompanists, Tony Bennett's flawless ear told him that Evans' sensitivity, touch, and deep harmonic wisdom would make him a perfect collaborator. In such circumstances, with no orchestra for cover and no rhythm section for buoyancy, a singer's control, intonation and steadiness are in bold relief. None of Bennett's recordings discloses more clearly his mastery of those elements. Evans, whose singing piano lines were inevitably described as lyrical, illuminates Bennett's supreme interpretation of lyrics. His own solos sing beautifully.

HOW MY HEART SINGS -1989 FANTASY/RIVERSIDE RECORDS OJC-369 PRESSING

Bill Evans's return to full activity in 1962 came almost a year after his celebrated trio recordings at the Village Vanguard. Just ten days after that classic "live" session, bassist Scott LaFaro had died in a highway accident. Evans, deeply shaken, eventually re-formed his trio with the same drummer (Paul Motian) and Chuck Israels on bass. Their first visit to a studio was for a dual purpose: to make an all-ballad-tempo album, Moonbeams, and this "normal" set at the same time. It was producer Orrin Keepnews's thought that recording eight slow numbers in a row might prove unduly enervating; accordingly, the total two album repertoire was interspersed over three days of recording and the net result was two excellent additions to the Evans catalog.

BILL EVANS WALTZ FOR DEBBY 1986 FANTASY/RIVERSIDE RECORDS OJC-210 Sealed LP

This is the second of two Riverside albums made up of selections recorded by the classic Bill Evans/ Scott LaFaro/ Paul Motian trio at their legendary live recording session of June 15, 1961. Although originally issued a half-year later than Sunday at the Village Vanguard (now OJC 140), this was by no means an afterthought collection of lesser items. Evans and producer Orrin Keepnews had immediately recognized that there was more than enough material for two top-level records. The dozen chosen performances were subdivided to enable the first album released to feature LaFaro, who had died in an auto accident just ten days after recording. Thus this second collection can fairly be said to present a more typical overview of this remarkable unit at work. 1.   My Foolish Heart   2.   Waltz For Debby   3.   Detour Ahead   4.   My Romance   5.   Some Other Time 6.   Milestones
