“ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK”

WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! MEGARARE and Hard-To-Find original Decca Records High Fidelity MONO reissue released by Decca Records, made and distributed in Chile in 1964 by Industrias Eléctricas Y Musicales Odeon, S.A. (Odeon Records Chile), catalog number LTC-37907, with machine etched matrix number MG 4426 N12 (“N” inverted) in Side A and MG4427T4 N13 (“N” inverted) 1P in Side B, with traditional maroon/silver Decca Records labels of the period, with big “Decca” logo at top. Yes, Sirs, another FIND from Chile!!!

“Rock Around The Clock”, in format 12”, was a compilation album by Bill Haley And His Comets originally released in December 1955 in USA and we had to wait some years to can see this so historical Rock ‘N’ Roll album released here in Chile and then it was also reissued many times (the oldest Chilean version I know it was released, maybe, in 1957), one of those reissues this copy, which was released in 1964 as part of the Odeon Records Series “Selección Aplausos” (in English, “Selection Applause”) and, like usual in the period, we got it with a UNIQUE COVER, made of a single thin cardboard folded in the middle, at the bottom edge, with two sheets of paper attached (not glued) to that cardboard for front and back covers, and kept all held for an outer plastic bag, which’s also part of the cover. Front cover has a UNIQUE PICTURE SLEEVE, a picture of the “The Comets” inside a star and a picture of Bill Haley bigger and outside the star, with the name of the band written in Spanish only at top edge and the album title written in English only, with Decca Records and “Selección Aplausos” logos at top left corner. Back cover is also different, it has the album and song titles written in English only, with full credits for songwriters and the name of the band written in Spanish only, with additional information “Canta (Sings): Bill Haley”, with almost the same original US liner notes, written in Spanish only, and the Decca Records and “Selección Aplausos” logos and catalog number at top right corner. In labels, the name of the band is written in Spanish only and the album and song titles are is written in English only, with full credits for songwriters and additional information about licenses. It’s interesting to notice that sides are identified as “Faz 1” and “Faz 2” (in English, “Face 1” and “Face 2”) in back cover but only “A” and “B” in labels. If you know some pictures of Bill Haley of the period, then you could have already noticed this Chilean design used for front cover took 2 different pictures (both of them taken by legendary photographer and also songwriter James Kriegsmann, in 1956, in New York), one of them, with the “smiling Comets”, was edited, because Bill Haley, originally at right top row, was deleted. The picture of Bill Haley is taken from a publicity business card of personal manager of Bill Haley And His Comets James H. Ferguson for Decca Records (also used, edited, for the original US Picture Sleeve of single “It’s A Sin”, released in 1957), with the only difference that original US picture is black and white and Bill looks to the right and in Chilean design the jacket is tinted red and he looks to the left. So, here you have the chance to get and own this MEGARARE CHILEAN PRESS of this album by Bill Haley And His Comets, with UNIQUE COVER, UNIQUE PICTURE SLEEVE and UNIQUE BACK COVER DESIGN, a record rarely seen, A MUST TO HAVE for all fans, lovers and collectors of Rock ‘N’ Roll music of the ‘50’s and especially for all fans, lovers and collectors of Bill Haley And His Comets!!!

The cover was already described and it’s in nice VG- or VG condition, mostly clean and clear, with some wear in all edges, more evident in corners, with evident age browning in back cover, some faint stains and blemishes, and also faint ring marks and creases, most of the grade is given for the humidity marks, mostly seen in back cover, also present in front cover but hard to see at first sight because of the dark color. The outer plastic bag is in VG- or VG condition, with creases, little rips, a bit dirty, with a big tear in back cover, where the plastic was opened, but as you can see in pictures, it’s complete and with all seams solid, it doesn’t have the best look but it has worked very well protecting the fragile papers. The record is in G+ or even VG- condition in both sides, it has lost part of the gloss but it’s clean, with loads and loads and loads of scuffs, many light and not so light hairlines and soft and not so soft scratches of all sizes and in all directions, which amazingly don’t affect sound at all. The labels are in VG or VG+ condition both sides, clean and clear, with evident spindle hole wear and some tears and faint discoloration. The sound is in strong VG- or even VG condition both sides, loud, clean and clear, virtually no background noise (background noise was normal in most of records pressed in Chile), with constant soft and not so soft crackles and regular light clicks, with occasional pops here and there, which can cause some distraction but the sound keeps loud and clear from the beginning to end. Overall, this is still a great record in this MEGARARE CHILEAN PRESS, with UNIQUE COVER, with UNIQUE PICTURE SLEEVE and UNIQUE BACK COVER DESIGN, for sure not for Minty minds or audiophiles, but with a so fragile cover who saw better days even though it’s still in nice complete condition, and with the record with not the best look but clean, with also clean and fully readable labels and a very decent and respectable sound quality after about 60 years, which shouldn’t disappoint anyone and should satisfy any serious collector who knows the real level of rarity of this Chilean press!!! Bid with confidence and don’t wait until the last second because you could lose the chance to get a real collectable record from Chile (South America) in superb condition like this copy is. We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
