This could be the first "oldies" album ever cut by an established rock & roll band. That, and the fact that it's good, makes it a crying shame that Warner Bros. Records has never seen fit to reissue Bill Haley and His Comets on CD. When Bill Haley signed with Warner Bros. in 1960, it was considered a major coup by a fledgling record company, for Haley was still remembered as a rock & roll star, even though he hadn't charted a hit in two years. The company's first idea, apart from getting out a surprisingly sharp single recording of "Candy Kisses," was to have Haley and his band -- Franny Beecher (lead guitar), Billy Williamson (steel guitar), Al Rapa (bass guitar), Ralph Jones (drums), Johnny Grande (piano), and Rudy Pompilli (sax, flute) -- cut an album of rock & roll standards. The result was a fine long-player that didn't re-ignite Haley's chart action but did give the band a good showcase for their current sound, which was as solid as ever. Haley might not have been the ideal singer for a ballad like "My Special Angel," but his versions of "Whole Lotta Shakin', "Kansas City," and "Blueberry Hill" are respectable; they may not be the most exciting versions ever done, but they show off the band to good advantage. "Shake, Rattle and Roll" as it is re-cut here also showcases Franny Beecher shifting into Chuck Berry territory in his playing. Vocally Haley is better on these Warner Bros. sides than he'd been on most of his classic Decca recordings of the 1950s, and he sounds very happy and easygoing on these songs, while Beecher and Pompilli add their requisite touches. What is missing is excitement -- Haley and the band may have played better on this adaptation of "Rock Around the Clock" (with Beecher finally getting to put his own stamp on the song, rather than recreating Danny Cedrone's guitar break from the original), but it lacks the urgency and immediacy of the original. Bill Haley and His Comets sound like a good band, and many of the songs are a throwback to a brand of rock & roll that was already identified as "old- fashioned." It wasn't going to sell millions, or even hundreds of thousands in 1960, but it's as good a representation of the band now as it was in that time, and as good as one could hope for, short of a live album.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A small color-coded tape noted on the spine

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Some shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams (yet)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
