Description
Columbia 10-inch 78 RPM record # 38044 is "Gloomy Sunday" and "Night and Day" by Billie Holiday. Both sides are considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's Hot Jazz Discography, but the recordings were made on different dates. "Gloomy Sunday" was recorded on August 7, 1941, with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra. And "Night and Day" was recorded on December 13, 1939, with band members including Buck Clayton (trumpet) and Lester Young (tenor sax).
The record looks to be in heavily played condition, dull from wear and riddled with surface scuffs and scratches. there are also some pressure lines that look like they could develop into hairline cracks, but so far none of them have broken through. It plays better than I would have expected, however, on my Audio-Technica turntable, without any jumping or repeating, and with audible but still very tolerable background noise, including some occasional clicks or pops or short passages of ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well it will play on your equipment.
Also included is the Columbia sleeve shown in the pictures, but it is creased, chipped and torn, and doesn't add to the overall value. Please look closely at the pictures for any label damage, including stickers or inscriptions.
