"The Golden Years" Volume II was released in 1966, four years after The Golden Years (vol. 1).  Like the first volume, it contains three records that each contain sixteen tracks and a sixteen page booklet.  The booklet has an essay and detailed track info but no photos (there are reproductions of watercolor paintings instead).

The bulk of side one of the first record consists of dance tunes by Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra with Billie on vocals.  Even though they're dance numbers and the emphasis is more on swinging than singing, Billie still delivers her vocals in her distinctive style.  Fact is, the majority of the songs on the first two records are Teddy Wilson recordings with Billie playing a supporting role on vocals.  The singer wasn't the star . . . yet.

Unlike the first Golden Years set, this set gets better the deeper you get.  On the third record, things really take off.  It contains some songs that will most likely forever be associated with Billie Holiday, including "Night and Day" and "Solitude".  Her control is exquisite on "Night and Day".  She bends her way around the back side of the beat in so many different ways it's astounding.  And yet, by the end of every phrase she's exactly where she's supposed to be.  How'd she get there?  The version of "Solitude" on this record is something to behold.  The sax section and Eddie Heywood's piano provide fantastic complements to Billie's vocals.

"The Golden Years" Volume II works best as a companion to the first set.  It doesn't have the consistency of the original The Golden Years, but it has a few great moments toward the end of the set and it fills in a lot of holes along the way.

(b)          The records are  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           The record comes with the original 20-page booklet (so says the disclosure on the back panel)

(d)          The records are believed to come in their original stock inner sleeves

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the box:

-        Cover has a neat, round (PROMO?) cutout hole in one of the corners (the punch hole is a little messy on the front side)
