Description
BILLY EMERSON - SUN #203 - ACETATE FROM 1954
This is another item from Sam Phillips' SUN STUDIO located at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tn. where Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, Charlie Feathers, B.B. King and others stepped through the door to record history.
This is an original metal acetate that was owned by Sam Phillips and was purchased by music researcher/collector Stephen LeVere from Sam Phillips. This is a great, historical piece from the most famous studio in the world.
Unfortunately, this piece HAS NOT survived the sands of time well. Please read the description carefully before bidding!!!!!
This record has about 20 SECONDS of one of the takes Billy Emerson recorded of I'm Not Going Home which was released on Sun 203 with The Woodchuck. The other music on here is School Cheer, which sounds like a school song sung by a group of young ladies. Sam was known to travel around with a portable recording machine in the early days recording whatever/wherever trying to scratch out a living. I don't know if the School Cheer was recorded in the studio or in the field but at any rate this is a very unique, cool piece that clearly represents the early days when he was trying to stay ahead of the bills.
Labels- None. Sun 203 and U-114 (inc) is on the label in grease marker along with a piece of masking tape. Not real pretty to look at.
Playing Surface: Warped, dented, scuffed and scratched....big time! It's got dents ALL over it...looks like a woodpecker had a heyday pounding the bajeebers out of it! WARPED....BIG TIME!!!
When I played it the poor old needle was bouncing around like a deranged jack rabbit from hell!!!
Yes, I can hear the School Cheer amidst the needle bouncing all over....Luckily, the Billy Emerson PARTIAL TAKE is near the spindle hole and could be heard because it's not bouncing around as much. It's definitely him and you can hear that great Sun echo in that historic little room. Maybe someone with more recording knowledge and more options with equipment can do better. I only have one record player and can't really adjust the arm on it.
As you can tell I have been brutally honest about the condition or lack there of of this scarce, one of a kind record. If you are a MAJOR Sun collector/fan this would be a wonderful item to frame with a photo or stock issue of Billy Emerson. Great display piece. If you are looking for an awesome listening experience...please keep looking. I don't want anyone to be dissappointed.
This is a UNIQUE addition to any Sun collection.
