Released in 1971. Please do not confuse this gem of an original with all the different reissues on Columbia Records. By the way when this album was reissued on Columbia the entire album was remixed and remastered and "You Cant Make me Free" was shortened by 3 minutes! See below for more details.

Vinyl grading:
M = Mint (like new, looks Unplayed!) (Superior play)
NM = Near Mint (very clean, barely a mark) (Plays Great!)
VG++ = Excellent (some very light scuffs or hairlines) (Nice Play…barely any surface crackle)
VG+ = With a decent amount of scuffs and hairlines (with obvious surface noise)
VG = Very scratched (but plays much better than the appearance seems to be)
Cover Grading:
NM = Cover shows no seam splits, no ringwear, barely any or no edge wear.
NM- = Same as NM but may have 1 or 2 small imperfections which are not significant
VG++ = Perhaps a neatly taped seam split or two, or some creases, or some light ringwear or a combination of these
VG+ = Often strong signs of ringwear, or many seam splits, or large very noticeable creases, or stains or a combination of these
VG = An unappealing cover in many ways but the rareness of the album or the high quality of the vinyl makes the album still worthwhile to the listener
A few short months after abandoning the heavy organ-and-drums duo Attila -- partially because their sole record flopped, partially because he stole the drummer's wife -- Billy Joel reinvented himself as a sensitive singer/songwriter. He had shown signs of McCartney-esque songcraft on Hour of the Wolf, the last Hassles album, but his debut album in 1971, Cold Spring Harbor, is where these talents blossomed. The record was very charming, boasting two of his finest songs -- the lovely "She's Got a Way" and the bitterly cynical "Everybody Loves You Now" -- and a score of flawed but nicely crafted songs that illustrated Joel's gift for melody, as well as his pretensions (the mock-gospel in "Tomorrow Is Today," a classical stab entitled "Nocturne"). In its own way, Cold Spring Harbor was quite a gem of the sensitive singer/songwriter era; Joel may have been in his formative stages as a craftsman, but his talents are apparent, and he never made an album as intimate and vulnerable ever again. Ironically, it didn't sound right upon its original release on Family Productions Records. Through a bizarre mastering error, the tapes were sped up. Upon later reissues on Columbia Records, the pitch was changed and back up vocals and some instruments were removed.
