Bim Sherman had two distinct strengths that served him well throughout his too brief recording career. First there was his songwriting, which was full of an understated and subtle intelligence, and he fiercely refused to do anything but his own compositions, even if it meant releasing his songs on his own small labels and selling them from the trunk of a car.

And secondly, there was his voice, which was so thin and fragile, but also surprisingly plaintive and sweet, leaving the listener with the feeling of having connected with a real human being.

Love Forever was originally released in 1978, and collected ten of Sherman's self-released Jamaican singles from his Scorpio, Sun Dew and Red Sea labels. The album was re-released in 1984 under the title Danger, and this 2XLP issue from Century expands things to 17 tracks, covering the best of Sherman's output from the mid- to late-'70s.

Included are "Lightning and Thunder," the impressive "Danger" (with its wonderfully arranged horn section), the classic "Mighty Ruler," and the subdued, intelligent "Chancery Lane." Sherman's very first recording, "100 Years," is also here, and the crude, muddy production can't conceal the presence of a special talent.

Sherman's death at the age of 48 robbed the world of an unique, stubbornly maverick musician who never shied away from innovation, but only if it suited him. He followed his own drummer, and in the style-a-minute world of Jamaican music, that made Sherman a refreshing iconoclast.
