Background -

Gregorio Paniagua was born in Madrid, where he studied cello at the Royal Conservatory with Don Ricardo Vivó. He later studied viola da gamba with August Wenzinger and conducting with Sergiu Celibidache. In addition to the viola da gamba, Paniagua performs on the vihuela, lute, and hurdy gurdy. In 1964, he founded the ensemble Atrium Musicae de Madrid, with which he has performed in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. - Robert Adelson

On its first release as a double LP, this legendary 1980 recording was described as ‘a rousing sonic spectacular’ in the US audiophile magazine The Absolute Sound (TAS). Setting off on a sonic journey through Europe, Gregorio Paniagua and his legendary ensemble Atrium Musicæ de Madrid took the famous theme known as La Spagna, used widely by composers across Europe for several centuries, as their point of departure. In their quest to bring to life these old scores, they used a huge range of instruments, from clavicytherium (a ‘vertical harpsichord’) to a simple plastic cup, and the vivid performances and no less vivid recording enchanted both early music fans and audiophiles. - Arkiv

Originally released in 1980 on the Swedish BIS label, the double LP la Spagna XV-XVI-XVII Centuries became an instant, certified “audiophile classic”. It was on the late Harry Pearson’s “Super Disc” list since forever, with used copies regularly fetching upwards of $200.
The music can generally be described as “ancient dance music” of the XV, XVI and XVIIth centuries played mostly on original instruments by the Atrium Musica De Madrid under the direction of Gregorio Paniagua. Recorders, a dizzying variety of stringed and percussion instruments that set a mood at once exotic and yet familiar thanks to elements used in late ‘60s popular English folk music (The Incredible String Band, or, for example, in Roxy Music’s “Triptych”).

More specifically, the eighty minutes of music features various composers of the era working in three basic Spanish musical archetypes: “La Spagna”, “a Spagnoletta” and “Pavane”—but don’t let an academic description turn you off here because the music creates an atmosphere that is magical and intensely visual.

The original was recorded by Robert von Bahr live to a Revox A77 using but a spaced pair of Sennheiser MKH 105 condenser microphones. The simple chain produces a recording of astonishing transparency, three-dimensionality and coherency, though of course the perspective is also somewhat distant. The perspective generates rich atmospherics and mystery, while the recording’s purity and transparency maintain remarkable transient detail. - Michael Fremer
Highly sought after 2-LP set. Original instruments, acoustic setting - none finer - this is why it’s on the TAS list. The LPs are near mint minus with no serious marks on the vinyl, just a few spider marks which are caused by sliding the LPs in and out of the inner sleeve. These types of marks normally don’t sound, but it really depends on the sensitivity of your audio gear. The gate-fold jacket shows a bit of shelf wear and discolouration due to ring wear. It has NO seam splits, but does have a small sticker stuck to the front of the jacket which can be carefully removed. A terrific audiophile copy of a much sought after recording.

CONDITION Details:

The gate-fold LP jacket is in Very Good plus overall condition. The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits. The corners are solid. The colors are a bit faded by ring wear and shelf wear over time, doesn't look very pretty, but the jacket is solid. Shows a bit of shelf wear along the seams and corners - see pictures as they are of the actual item.

The LPs are in excellent plus overall condition! The vinyl has no serious marks. The LPs do have some spider marks (caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve). These types of marks may sound, depending on the sensitivity of your audio gear...some extraneous sound is inevitable and should be expected for a vintage LP. This LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.

A Short Note About LP GRADING -

• Mint = Only used for sealed items.
• Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
• Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
• Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
• Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.
