Coming off the back of the Southern blues rockers Black Crowes' first two highly successful albums (Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion), the band were due a change. Unfortunately, they decided to use an image lifted from Hustler magazine for the cover of Amorica, which, shock horror, showed a bit of pubic hair. The resulting controversy shifted focus away from the actual music and on to moral outrage. It's a shame, because Amorica found the band in a looser guise, sounding more like a wasted jam band as they cast their gaze over themes of love, rock and roll and questionable lifestyle choices. This time around, the band felt more authentic and wired. Part of this sound is the result of the band scrapping their work for their intended album Tall, and hitting the road in order to find their muse. The mojo returned in spades, and from the forceful opening one-two punches of 'Gone' and 'A Conspiracy', it's clear this is a band who are at their peak. 'High Head Blues' incorporates a little dirty funk into their sound, and frequently switches from chilled swagger to explosive exposition. 'Cursed Diamond' is a country tinged ballad, with a fevered performance from vocalist Chris Robinson that raises some concern over his well being. This set includes reworked tracks from Tall, and two radio sessions (one from 1992 and another from 1994), which all add context to what might just be Black Crowes most honest and authentic work.
