Description

BLACK SABBATH - " BLACK SABBATH ", Vertigo Records (VO 6) Stereo, 1970.

Extremely rare, UK first pressing of the classic debut LP by Sabbath.

This first pressing has the Vertigo 'swirl' label and inner sleeve, matte finish gatefold sleeve, matrix numbers ending in '1Y*1' and '2Y*1' and the all important "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" text on the label on Side B - see photos provided to clarify these details.

Professionally cleaned on my Moth record cleaning machine and put in a new poly-lined inner sleeve (with the original retained to keep it complete, of course).

Beacuse there's no danger of this record not selling, I'm starting this auction off at just 99p to get things going!

CONDITION:

VINYL  =  EX- (PLAYS BETTER) (No deep scratches, excessive surface noise, distortion, etc. The labels are pretty clean with only light spindle trails. Under a bright grading lamp there are few light scuffs on the vinyl and quite a few fine hairline marks - nothing deep and probably just the result of handling/going in and out of the inner sleeve. Many records like this can be a bit noisy, but this one is not. In fact it plays really surprisingly well - strong and clear, with no distortion or surface noise to speak of. Being ultra critical (wearing headphones with the volume turned up), there is some faint surface noise in the pressing that is just audible during the silences before and between tracks, but once the music starts it is gone. If only this LP had looked like it plays, it would have earned a straight 'EXCELLENT' grading, but I always take a record's overall condition into account when grading. That this LP has been able to wear a few handling scuffs with no audible defects is testament to the fact that it was pressed so well in the first place. I would also say, that I simply don't think this LP has had that many plays in it's lifetime - many other records in the collection this came from had been played to death, but as soon as I took this out of the inner sleeve it was obviously in much better condition than the others, right down to the absence of heavy spindle trails on the label. Possibly this record was never a real favourite of the original owner?.. Most of the rest of the collection was more Blues and Blues-Rock orientated, so I can see how this might have been bought on a whim but never really played hard like most copies of this LP were.

Note: for the purposes of this listing I have tested this LP on my Linn LP12 Sondek turntable - generally this is quite a critical test, but I must point out that I cannot guarantee exactly how this LP will sound on your turntable - common sense for most... but then this is ebay!!!)

SLEEVE = V.G.+ (No rips, tears, big creases, defacing etc. In pretty good shape, but the edges and corners are worn - see photos for further clarification. This type of isolated wear would be the result of time stored on shelves or record boxes, rather than abuse or over use... again comfirming my theory that this LP spent most of it's life on a shelf not a turntable)

NOTE: I must point out that we are actually a long standing physical record shop, with many decades worth of selling, trading and grading records under our collective belts. Unlike so many of the jokers now selling records on ebay, we know how to grade records. Before bidding, please read my description carefully, decide how much this record is worth to you and place you max bid accordingly. Please also feel free to check out my feedback from the many other successful transactions I have made in the past.
