Black Sabbath (Debut) : Original Pressing 1Y1 / 2Y1
This UK Vertigo pressing is strictly speaking a second press as it does not have 'A Philips Record Product' beneath VERTIGO on the label. However, it is often sold as a first pressing but it's always sensible to be clear on this.
The vinyl is in fantastic condition and the audio in the main plays superbly but with a little interference here and there. The gatefold is in excellent condition as is the original Swirl inner.

Visual grading
This vinyl is visually stunning and retains a beautiful glossy sheen. Whilst it has been played a number of times, there is some spindle wear, the vinyl itself has always been very carefully handled and is a super clean example of its kind. At first glance it looks 'as new'. Having looked under various lights I can only detect a couple of very faint hairlines and there are no scratches. This pressing really has been so well preserved down the years and has lost none of its original 'shine'. The labels and run out grooves are also extremely clean.
Play grading
The intro on 'Black Sabbath' is stunning and you can hear the 'tolling bell' and thunder very clearly indeed. There is no interference at all. The opening guitar solo is very powerful and whilst there is some static/light crackle in the first quiet section there are no clicks or pops and the music still plays very clearly. There are a small number of very quiet 'ticks' also that are not intrusive in any way. As it continues the music plays loud and true and with no distortion. The next quieter section has a little more crackle perhaps but this is vinyl and perhaps adds to the atmosphere?! It isn't loud but it is worth pointing out there are still no clicks, pops or skips. As the volume increases the guitar work plays with superb definition and power and there is no 'background' of any kind. The end section is awesome, not even a hint of distortion! Just a little crackle literally at the end. 'The Wizard' has minimal static on the intro and only a couple of light 'ticks' and then plays with stunning power throughout. There is no obvious 'background' at all, just a hint of mega light static that you can only hear occasionally. A superb version without doubt and no intrusive clicks or pops. 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep' is stunning from the very first groove. There is very light crackle in the first quiet section but it does not intrude on the quality of the listen at all. It then plays with wonderful power and definition with hardly any 'background'. The sound is so rich and deep and the bass so strong. Superb! The end drum section plays with great clarity and no interference. The bass section then does have some crackle, a couple of light clicks and some 'raspy' type sounds at the end. 'N.I.B' then plays incredibly well from the get go and there is no lessening in quality as it progresses. The power and range of the audio is very impressive and there is no distortion either. The guitar solo near the end is fantastic and the only interference really is a minimal amount of crackle right at the end but overall this is a stunning version of this track.
'Evil Woman...' has one very quiet dull sound on the intro and then plays with wonderful audio for the remainder. There are no clicks or pops and barely any static. You can turn it up loud without fear of distortion! A great version with just a little crackle on the fade out. The quiet intro on 'Sleeping Village' plays clearly but there are some rasping static sounds for a few revolutions and a little crackle so can only be graded as VG- because of this. As the guitar 'kicks in' the audio is stunning! There is no obvious 'background' and the sonic quality just breathtaking. You can hear each note perfectly i.e. there is no 'muddiness' to the sound. As you reach the quieter section there is a little static but it then plays with superb clarity and the bass again so powerful. From then on the guitar and bass work is mind-blowing and this entire instrumental section plays with incredible definition and power and no intrusive interference of any kind. It is 100% stunning and grades as Near Mint without doubt. The final 'note' just has a little static in the background. 'Warning' closes the album in fine style with a superb bass intro and from then it plays without fault. I just cannot stress enough just how fantastically well it plays! The only negative is 4/5 click sounds at the end of the drum solo section where the music is a lot quieter. Thereafter the audio is of a very high standard and all I heard was a little 'background' in one of quieter moments, not too many of them! A superb version overall with little to detract from the stunning audio.
The Gatefold
This gatefold is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear. The top edges are very clean with only a small amount of rubbing by the right hand corners and the bottom edges do have a little more wear but nothing major. The wide spine is in great shape with only mild corner wear. The other corners again have only a minimal amount of wear. The front cover is in lovely condition with only one scuff type next to the Vertigo logo but it really isn't that obvious. The back cover is in fantastic order with no marking and the VO catalogue number can be seen top right. The inside of the gatefold is very clean with only a little white 'spotting' here and there. Overall a very impressive Vertigo cover.
Vertigo Inner sleeve
The poly-lined large swirl Vertigo inner has no splits or tears and barely any creasing. All you can see is the usual age related fading around the edges. A great example.
The labels
The Vertigo swirl labels have no marking or writing and remain very clean. Yes a fair amount of spindle but that is the only negative really.
