Originally released in 1971, it's bizarre to consider that the third full-length from Birmingham metal legends Black Sabbath was so critically maligned upon commercial unveiling, with many a clutched pearl and pen due to the band's harrowing, cavernous craftsmanship. While Ozzy, Iommi, Butler and Ward are constantly rewarded their flowers for being the ultimate godfathers of the metal soundscape, it'd be Master Of Reality where they'd truly pioneer the doom and sludge metal styles; down-tuning their guitars and bass to conjure a tone that imbued a macabre and ethereal dryness into the psychedelic grooves they'd begun to make their musical bedrock. The album would mark their final effort to feature producer Rodger Bain, who had handled work behind the scenes on 1970's self-titled debut as well its sophomore follow-up Paranoid, with the members now feeling a more assured in-studio confidence which allowed them to pour over more minute details such as the oppressive atmospherics that enshroud the malevolent closing track 'Into The Void.' Boasting their fan favourite ode to weed and inadvertently spawning the stoner-doom genre on bombastic opener 'Sweet Leaf' to the iconic ripper 'Children Of The Grave', the record has even been credited by the likes of Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and John Stanier (Helmet, Tomahawk, Battles) as also the birthplace of grunge, incorporating odd time signatures and compositions into blues-based rock song structures. Over five decades on, this looming shadow of this classic is still felt and heard in every corner of the heavy music pantheon, while this deluxe edition comes with a full bonus disc of alternate and studio outtakes.
