Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Terry "Geezer" Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). The murderous riff on which the title track hinges set the tone for this bruising album. Doom, death and destruction are Black Sabbath's staple diet, which they devour with numbing intensity. Repetition is at the heart of the album, sustained chords and ponderous bass often slowing tempos to crawling pace until, on "War Pigs," they groan with suffocation. Guitarist Tony Iommi punctuates the sound with simple but lengthy solos, leaving vocalist Ozzy Osbourne to inject a sly cockiness. Pretenders have often grasped at their crown, but PARANOID shows that Black Sabbath remain the quintessential heavy metal band.
