Description
This is a rare and much coveted very first pressing of Black Sabbath's 1970 album, 'Paranoid', on first pressing UK Vertigo vinyl (6360 011).
The vinyl features the large Vertigo swirl denoting a very first pressing while the sleeve carries the 'Jim Simpson, Big Bear, Birmingham' management credit (see photo) only seen on the very first few copies of Paranoid. Just the initial batch of covers carried this credit before it was withdrawn; Big Bear swiftly disappeared and all subsequent copies of the sleeve omit the credit as it was no longer applicable.
This is a very smart copy of this album indeed.
The unlaminated first pressing gatefold cover is naturally vulnerable to wear and tear but this copy has survived well. It is strong, not dog-eared and floppy, and all the edges are straight and true, with only a little wear here and there. The opening edge is unfeathered and straight, indicating only a little use. There is some evidence of foxing and just a hint of ringwear on the rear panel. There are no tears, rips or creases and no unwanted writing. This strong unlaminated gatefold grades VG+.
In natural light the vinyl looks fine although when examined under harsh halogen lighting it is possible to see light wispy handling and scuff marks here and there. However this is certainly not a worn out and abused copy. This fine flat disc grades VG.
Here is a rare chance to obtain a fine copy of an extremely elusive and totally correct very first pressing of Paranoid by Black Sabbath.
