Paranoid is the second studio album by the English heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Released in September 1970, the album was for the longest time the only one by the band to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of 13 in 2013.
The album is commonly identified as the band's magnum opus. Paranoid contains some of the band's best-known signature songs, including "Iron Man", "War Pigs", and the title track.
To capitalise on their chart success in the US, the band returned to the studio in June 1970, just four months after Black Sabbath was released. The new album was initially set to be named War Pigs after the song "War Pigs", which was critical of the Vietnam War; however, Warner changed the title of the album to Paranoid when what would become the album's lead-off single, "Paranoid", was written in the studio at the last minute.
As Bill Ward explained that they didn't have enough songs for the album, and Tony just played the [Paranoid] guitar lick and that was it. It took twenty, twenty-five minutes from top to bottom. The single was released in September 1970 and reached number four on the UK charts, remaining Black Sabbath's only top ten hit. The album followed in the UK in October 1970, where, pushed by the success of the "Paranoid" single, it made number one in the charts. The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
After the release of their debut album in February 1970, Black Sabbath returned to the studio in June that year, again with producer Rodger Bain, to record their second album.
The album was recorded at Regent Sound Studios and Island Studios in London, England. The album's eponymous single "Paranoid" was written in the studio at the last minute to fulfill the record label's request for a single. The album was originally intended to be called Warpiggers which was a slang term for a black magic wedding. It was then shortened to War Pigs and eventually Paranoid after the record company became convinced that the song of the same name had potential as a single. As drummer Bill Ward explains: "We didn't have enough songs for the album, and Tony just played the "Paranoid" guitar lick and that was it. It took twenty, twenty-five minutes from top to bottom." The record company thought the album would fare better commercially if it were named after the first single.
The song "Iron Man" was originally entitled "Iron Bloke". Upon hearing the main guitar riff for the first time, Ozzy Osbourne remarked that it sounded "like a big iron bloke walking around". The title was later changed to "Iron Man" as bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler composed the lyrics.

The Vinyl
The vinyl is very clean and on initial inspecion the playing surface looks almost as perfect in my opinion. Free of any marks that I can see, at least no audio sounding marks or scraches at all. This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free of any warps. The vinyl has retained its original sheen from new in my opinion on initial inspection this looks like it has obviously not been played that much in my opinion! On close inspection any marks that could possibly be seen would be very light sleeve removal only but importantly no audio sounding marks or needle marks that would cause any nasty loud clicks or pops that I heard at all! (Too be honest I find it hard to even see a blemish at all on the playing surface. No needle scratches)
The audio quality
I have played this track for track at very loud volume prior to listing at very loud volume three times! The audio is absolutely fantastic throughout! From the moment that the needle hits the playing surface , it is obvious that this vinyl not only visually but audibly has only had very very minimal play only! The audio is stunning crystal clear and vibrant, very bright and clear throughout without any signs of distortion at all and plays with a lovely deep bassey feel only found like this on early pressings! I would grade the audio at least excellent plus to near as mint in my opinion! (I don't think that you will find better. Very rich and vibrant through out)
Please note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for isolated static or minor background static in between tracks only, not consistent through out the audio. Please remember that this is a genuine 40 year old record that would have originally been played on a 40 year old system.
This album has been stored in a case laying dormant for more than 35 years . A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves cause static. A constant clean before each play is recommended this will reduce any static and will enhance the audio quality.
The Labels
These are the Vertigo labels (only early UK press.) Feature the smaller Vertigo logo The labels are rich in color and are very clean! all text is fully readable. It is obvious that this vinyl has only had barely been played only by the limited spider marks that can be seen around the spindle hole at all, the spindle hole is free of any ware and of course is perfectly round!
The Record Sleeve
This is the original Vertigo sleeve with no splits or tares extremely clean and straight any fading with age is very minimal indeed again this is in line with the complete package an archive copy!
The Cover
This Is the laminated front only gate fold cover in absolutely stunning condition through out one of the best copies that you could ever hope to find and certainly one of the best looking copies of this variation that I have ever seen! Super glossy in appearance No edge splits or tares no real rubbing at all to mention. All text is readable! Any half moon type creases in the laminate and minor creases at the edges & near spine only noticed if looked for and I would class as being nit picking, can just be seen in photos but not really noticed unless looked for in my personal opinion. No nasty ringware that is normally seen on these! And any rubbing that could possibly be seen is minimal in my opinion. The cover has always been seperated from the vinyl and sleeve since purchased from new! rare like this! Graded at better than excellent plus to very Near Mint in my opinion!
An Audio Archive copy!
