DEBUT ALBUM
VERY RARE PHILIPS LABEL CREDIT TRUE FIRST PRESS
FIRST ISSUED ALBUM WITH PHILIPS CREDIT, QUICKLY CHANGED THEREAFTER. LARGER VERTIGO SWIRL ABOVE SPINDLE HOLE AND "VERTIGO" PRINTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LABEL. LATER COPIES CLAIMED AS FIRST PRESSES HAD THE "VERTIGO" LETTERING ABOVE THE SPINDLE HOLE, NO PHILIPS CREDIT AND A SMALLER SWIRL. OTHER DIFFERENCES TO LATER PRESSES AS FOLLOWS:
THE "33 1/3" PRINT IS OFFSET TO THE LEFT, LATER PRINTS BROUGHT IN LINE.
THE SMALL MATRIX NO. "847 903 2Y" IS OFFSET TO THE RIGHT - LATER PRINTS BROUGHT IN LINE.
FINALLY, THE LETTERING "BLACK SABBATH" IS VERY SLIGHTLY OFFSET TO THE RIGHT - AGAIN NEXT PRESSES WERE ALIGNED CORRECTLY.
THERE ARE CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCES ON THE ALBUM NOTES TOO. THIS ORIGINAL COVER HAS LARGER TEXT (SAME SIZE AS TRACK LISTINGS) FOR THE BAND MEMBERS, PRODUCTION, ENGINEERS AND "KEEF" PHOTOGRAPHY CREDITS. THE TEXT SIZE WAS HURRIDLY CHANGED ON SUBSEQUENT ISSUES TO THE SMALLER FONT BENEATH THE PROSE INTRO IMMEDIATELY ABOVE. THE REASON FOR THAT WAS TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE ADDITIONAL COMPOSER AND PUBLISHER CREDITS ON SUBSEQUENT PRESSES AS FOLLOWS:
COMPOSERS
WIEGAND, WIEGAND, WAGGONER - "EVIL WOMAN"
DUNBAR - "WARNING"
IOMI, BUTLER, WARD, OSBORNE
PUBLISHERS
FRANKLIN BOYD MUSIC - "EVIL WOMAN"
GETAWAY SONGS LTD. - "WARNING"
ESSEX MUSIC INT. LTD. - ALL OTHER TRACKS
THE OTHER VERY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE ON THIS PRESS WAS THE CHANGE TO THE COPYRIGHT INFORMATION AT THE THE BOTTOM OF THE SLEEVE WHICH WAS PRINTED IN ERROR. THIS COPY READS AS FOLLOWS:
"WARNING - COPYRIGHT SUBSISTS IN ALL STEREO RECORDINGS"
THIS WAS CORRECTED AND ALL PRESSES THAT FOLLOWED READ:
"WARNING - COPYRIGHT SUBSISTS IN ALL VERTIGO RECORDINGS"
Catalogue Number: VO 6 847 903 VTY - STEREO Country of Press: UK Record Label: LARGE VERTIGO SWIRL - PHILIPS CREDIT Press Date: 1970 Matrix No. Side 1: VO 6 1Y * 1 420 1 2 3 Matrix No. Side 2: VO 6 2Y * 1 420 12 1 2 Sleeve: Unlaminated gatefold Inner: Original SWIRL company inner Printing Detail: Many printing detail differences Condition: Side 1 - Vinyl Visual: VG - Several light surface marks - no heavy scratches though - there is a small press fault (indent) on the last track - this does not affect play. Side 2 - Vinyl Visual: VG - Several light surface marks - no heavy scratches though - there is a small press fault (indent) on the last track - this does not affect play. Side 1 - Label: EX- Unmarked barring just a few light spindle marks around the hole. Side 2 - Label: VG / EX- Unmarked barring just a few light spindle marks around the hole and some light discolouration patches. Side 1 - Audio: VG - There is a light repeating click that lasts for about half of the first track (not too intrusive) otherwise just some general light crackling and a few light ticks here and there - plays well throughout. Side 2 - Audio: VG / EX - general light crackling and the odd light tick here and there - plays very well throughout Sleeve: G / VG- There is considerable wear to the edges, corners and the spine. The opening edges are quite feathered. The front and inner surfaces are in decent condition though and have no writing, staining or heavy marks which makes up for the edge wear somewhat. Not the best cover you may come accross but certainly one of the rarest given the distinct sleeve not differences - certainly worth bearing that in mind! The swirl inner is in good condition - some splitting on the edges, general discolouration and creasing too.
BELOW IS THE AMMENDED DETAIL ON THE LATER PRESSES
Thanks For Looking!!records are played from start to finish and I will always try to grade as accurately as possible ** I also use the Record Collector's Grading system which is as below: MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced. A little bit about me...As a Multiple Sclerosis sufferer I was forced to give up work some time ago but thanks to the opportunities that Ebay brings to people like me I decided to get my life back on track and give Ebay selling a go! So to all that look, enquire and buy - THANKS! This is one of many soon to be listed items of a music related theme. I will be listing numerous CD titles, some rare and plenty not so!
Look out for some rare and collectable vinyl listings - many genres including northern soul, prog, rock n roll and classical to name but a few
