BLACK SABBATH Same / Debut VERTIGO LARGE SWIRL 1st UK PROG ROCK
Black Sabbath, Same.
Original 1972 UK pressed Vertigo Records stereo LP, V0 6.
Earliest large swirl label issue with gatefold sleeve. Sleeve has credits within cross design and features a mis-spelt "Ossie".
Labels credit "Dunbar" for the track "Warning".
Matrix suffixes: 1Y*1 and 2Y*2.
LP is housed in plain sleeve.
Vinyl visually top end VG. Spider trail marks around the spindle areas indicates that the LP has had a fair few plays, although not to the point of the labels being worn at the centre areas. The LP still has glossy surfaces but on close inspection a number of light hairline scuff marks are visible. There are no deep or feelable marks or scratches however4vkend hairline.
Playback is on the whole very clean and bright and free of ticks or clicks. In the quieter moments there is heard some crackle, but never at an alarming or significant level. Side one has the edge over side two and plays top end VG plus. Side two starts similar but towards the second half has a little more noticeable crackle and drifts towards a straight VG as the side ends. I am using VG in the strict sense, and also to describe the quieter moments. This is a loud cut LP with the louder passages outweighing the quieter ones by a large margin, and during the louder parts playback is superb, clean and crisp with no background noise evident.
In summary the LP still provides a very comfortable listening experience with background noise occasionally heard but never obtrusive.
A point to notice is that on playing this LP I had to stop a number of times to remove fluff build-up from the stylus. This suggests that with extensive cleaning the sound quality only has room for improvement.
Labels are clean and undefaced.
Plain inner sleeve has four smallish tan stain spots else is in good order.
The gatefold sleeve is top end VG and not far from EX. No loss, tears, stickers, pen marks etc., and overall colour still good, saturated and unfaded to all main panels. Close inspection reveals just a few very light hairline impressions to the main panels but all of these are only visible at very close scrutiny. Spine still in overall good shape. Beginning to show overall wear but this all very moderate and just showing as a little whitening to joints and tips. Couple of half moon creases from handling to main panels. Generally the right side of clean and crisp however, and entry side is not feathered.
In summary not a mint or final upgrade copy but still a very nice example of this early Sabbath LP.
