From my own personal collection I am pleased to offer an exceptional example of the classic fourth studio album by BLACK SABBATH simply titled “BLACK SABBATH VOL. 4”, Catalogue Number 6360 071. This is an ORIGINAL 1972 UK STEREO 1st PRESSING on the VERTIGO SWIRL RECORD LABEL, with a lovely 1st issue Howards Printers Ltd. gatefold sleeve. Complete with the 4-page picture booklet and the correct Vertigo Swirl inner sleeve. [The matrix numbers are the earliest 1Y//1, 2Y//1 and “PORKY” and “PECKO” are etched in the run-outs of Sides A and B respectively].
The black matt finish gatefold sleeve is in EX condition with only light wear and minor creasing. The front and back covers are unmarked and the spine is square and solid with perfect text. The 4-page picture booklet is present and fully attached, but does have a bit of creasing and some wrinkles (probably from damp storage at some time). Tidy examples of this particular sleeve are notoriously difficult to find – but you can see from the photos that this is a very well preserved example indeed.
The Vertigo record retains its ‘just pressed’ shine and sits flat and true on the turntable. Visually it is in EX condition with just one or two noticeable sleeve removal/rub type surface marks each side. These are only superficial and of no audio significance whatsoever. The Vertigo Swirl labels are unmarked with only a few short spindle traces near the centres. There is virtually no wear to the spindle hole. I am confident that the record has not been played many times.
PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:
This is a top quality Vertigo pressing which plays with outstanding sound quality. The stereo playback is very loud-cut and powerful as you would expect from a record cut by George Peckham. Both sides play perfectly. There is no discernable deterioration in sound quality and barely any unwanted noise at all (just occasional very light surface sound which is never intrusive and only mentioned for complete accuracy). I think that it will be very difficult to find a better-playing 1st pressed copy of this essential album.
Complete with the correct Vertigo Swirl poly-lined inner sleeve. This is in VG condition with just a short tear near one side edge.
GRADINGS
The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:
· MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.
· EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.
· VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve.
PACKAGING
Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
