Packaging Details:
• Outer Sleeve (Front):
• Both orange-on-white and white-on-orange covers shown in earlier photos; the orange-on-white one is standard UK 1st press.
• Gatefold Interior:
• Full-color live performance shots of Ozzy, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Tony Iommi.
• Final panel includes the tracklisting, production credits, and shout-out to Coca-Cola Los Angeles (as issued).
• Insert Booklet: Not present. Original UK copies did not include a separate booklet — the artwork is within the gatefold.
⸻
Condition Evaluation (Visual):
• Sleeve: G+ to VG−
• Ringwear, edge wear, fraying on spine, light lamination loss
• Vinyl: VG to VG+
• Both sides show good gloss; minor surface lines only visible under bright light. Deadwax is clean and readable.
• Inner Sleeve: VG− (aged but original)
⸻
Historical & Collector Notes:
• This version is one of the earliest UK pressings, from the tail-end of Vertigo swirl usage in 1972 before the switch to the “spaceship” label.
• The swirl/text hybrid is considered a collector anomaly, issued only during a transitional period by Phonodisc. It adds interest but not necessarily a value premium unless condition is strong.
This is an original 1972 UK Vertigo first pressing of Black Sabbath Vol. 4, complete with swirl/text labels, die-cut inner sleeve, and original gatefold. While the sleeve shows moderate wear, the vinyl itself appears in strong collectible shape. A classic LP from the peak of Sabbath’s dark, experimental era — and very desirable among Vertigo swirl collectors.
