Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only very light and fine spindle marks tht show little.

Cat Number: S 63948.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce: although their most ‘popular’ album of the three they made, this was hardly a major seller. Not only that, this record has hardly ever been played and looks and sounds superb.

Brief Info: A mini-occult prog classic and their debut album, never an easy one to find in anything like decent conditions. Limited sales and airplay but having a cult following, all three of their albums are elusive and sort after. This black magic debut album that includes their most famous song ‘Come to the Sabbat’, a great track that has stood the test of time well. This first-pressed example unusually includes a little worn cover and this is one of those that always fair badly. Most badly rubbed and ringworn. The record little short of immaculate and certainly a copy for those who want near the very best.

Cover Grade and Format: One of rock’s most challenging covers, rarely even seen around excellent, this almost wears by looking at it. I happily grade this one as EX and considering just how fragile this one is, it’s probably deserving of a plus as few will be seen much better. An unlaminated, gatefold with dark artwork. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front & Back: Both quite similar: they show barely any rubbing or creasing and no sticker marks for which these surfaces are most prone. The most visible wear is very light rim arc rub near the top of the back, but in real terms this is minuscule. When so many are seen deeply impregnated with heavy ringwear that actually cuts into the cover, this is almost barely worthy of mention. Overall, clean and still looking attractive to the eye, the lack of real ringwear is a huge bonus considering the solid weight of the record inside. Very slight edge rubs are just visible, but very light indeed. Surface marks and blemishes are light and with most all of the ink and artwork intact, this is a way above average example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Classic demonic artwork and looking magnificant with almost zero wear. Colourful, clean and looking really lovely, this would have made lovely front cover artwork which I am sure would have attracted more potential buyers to this super album.

Top Edges: Very light rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any traces of wear and no feathering, no trimming. The finish is slightly off flush but square, a minor manufacture blemish. Record entered on this right outside back edge.

Spine and Text: A little light, patchy rubbing and chipping but most of the text is present and intact and strong. One or two characters have clipped. Unusually on this one, the foldlines have remained largely unscathed but there isi a little mild compression.

Corners: Light tip rubbing, the very least anyone could ever expect on this one and fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: I have always considered this to be a somewhat drab cover, on the outside anyway but inside its far nicer. Still I am not the designer and taken for what it is, it will prove hard to find much better. This has always been a challenging one to find in eye-pleasing condition. I think many, if not most collectors will enjoy this one.

The Inner: The unlined CBS promotional inner is included in excellent condition. This is the ‘Heavy on CBS’ inner from the early 70s, just slightly age toned but no splits or tears with barely any creasing. This was never lined.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) / EX++ with just a couple of ultra fine hairlines that of course have no sound. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Can hardly believe this now now 40 years old, I remember buying this album from Braintree market (not this copy) when still at school. A copy hardly played on all the evidence, this is a superb copy. Visually a great record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays up to its visual grading and beyond with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Devoid of unwanted sounds and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album with some quite passages. Intricate occult-prog-rock that fans of the genre will enjoy. Few copies will outperform this original pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive cult record. This near immaculate record will prove very difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
