Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' Moanin' is a key album in the history of hard bop, which is a jazz sub-genre that spun out of bebop among musicians who wanted to bring back some of the emotional depth that they felt had been lost in some of the more cerebral directions of bebop and cool jazz. In this case, the band's unmatched blend of blues, soul and rhythmic power stands out on a record from 1958 with a remarkable lineup of Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt. The album distilled everything that made the Messengers legendary, all anchored by Blakey's thunderous drumming and Timmons' iconic title track. It also introduced timeless Golson compositions, including Along Came Betty' and 'Blues March.' More than six decades later, hard bop has hardly been bettered.
