BEAUTIFUL BOX SET that reissues and repackages the first 3 Blops LPs, from 1970 to 1973.
Oh, that wacky onomatopoeia! Your guess is as good as mine as to what a “blop” is supposed to represent – I say it’s the sound a balloon full of ketchup makes on the sidewalk after your throw it out a third-story window – and if that’s what you want to name your band after, hey, have at it. But what I DO know is that this Blops Box Set of their 3 albums is one LAVISH package – lavish because it comes at you in a big ol’ fancy BOX, and inside is each of the three Blops albums, in their own separate covers, faithfully reproduced both front and back, along with a nifty little insert that tells the story of the band, which I could succinctly describe as the sound of 1972 Pink Floyd if they had grown up on a llama farm. In the spirit of the band’s love of a little onomatopoeia, this Blops box hits you like Wham! Bang! The first two Blops album are of the same mind – real late night acoustic chill-out sessions in some Andean rainforest – all whoosh! and swish! as opposed to blop and splorch. Much of this is instrumental, just like the Floyd. But when the Blops sing, even the vocals are slow and patient, drenched in echo. Pink Floyd played at an empty Pompeii stadium – these guys often sound like they’re camped out at the bottom of Macchu Picchu. Occasionally, things build up, like the 8:09 “Vertigo”, which slowly intensifies to finish with a furious electric guitar solo that, amidst these surroundings, sounds like an atom bomb in an abandoned church. Whammmo! Bleeeaaarrrggghhh! Elsewhere, the poppy “La Manana el Jardin” could’ve almost been a single, sounding a lot like Procol Harum’s joyous “Boredom”. By the time the Blops recorded their third LP, “Locomotiva”, they had completely metamorphosed into a heavy rock band, like many South American bands of that time, and while this is the one album in their repertoire most immediately accessible to conventional ears (meaning it goes Blam! Brrrrooonnng! And Pound Pound!), it also loses some of the trippy tropical mysticism that enveloped those first two albums. Regardless, as scholar Sean “Puffy” Combs would say, it’s all good. And besides, originals of any of these albums are BIG ticket items, provided you can even find them. It’s not like they go Plop! Splorch! Blop! in your lap every day, you know. This box set was purchased new, and played exactly ONCE, so figure on a conservative grading of NEAR MINT then.
