Blossom Dearie is never better than when she performs completely by herself. She has an inner time common to all great performers and the noodling of other players only disturb that wonderful sense of being deep into the time and the phrasing. She can swing as hard as the Count Basie band all by her little lonesome and does at appropriate times in this recording. She also has a knack of leaving all the notes out of a performance that don't make music--a kind of minimalism that brings clarity to her solo performances and which impressed Miles Davis so much. Her sense of time creates an atmosphere of never being hurried and the phrasing never being pushed by the tyranny of the beat that almost always reigns in a group performance. As far as the timing and nuance of phrases; she's the ultimate accompanist to her sense of phrase and the push and pull required by great interpreters of music. It is a delight to see how she uses the elasticity of the beat to great beautiful, expressing phrasing. These things are often lacking in her group performances where the players are locked into the time and on automatic pilot to the degree that so much beauty and subtlety that might have been there is lost.

The pieces themselves in this recording are first rate with few exceptions. Of special note are the amazingly subtle and moving performances on "A Wonderful Guy," "Love is an Elusive Celebration," "Lucky to be me" and "Spring can really hang you up the most." and "Sammy." In "If I were a bell" she simply swings her butt off--deep and hard into the rock solid moderate tempo that she holds better than any big band rhythm section.

This album does not lack for Blossom's predilection for cleaver and sophisticated lyrics. This is especially true of songs like, "The Wheelers and Dealers" "A Jazz Musician." This was originally a two record set that included "The Shape of Things to come" and "The Rivera"--both of which were omitted from this recording. I guess you can't have everything, but if you get a chance to hear these songs it will be clear how they fit into the overall scheme of selections.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The records come in their original, custom, inner sleeves, which are UNIQUE to this album.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)  (VISIBLE ON THE INNER GATEFOLD ONLY)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged
